My first attempt at sports photography...
      #675535 - 07/07/2008 11:25

A local MTB event...

This is the first time I've taken any photos of a sporting event so I'd be grateful for any comments!

I just took my 20D and 18-55mm EF-S lens this time, plus a few filters etc.. Wish I'd taken a flash, but no space in the camelbak! Might need to invest in a bigger one...

I have a small flickr set of photos and there are a couple here as well.

Not bad. Nice composition, shows a sense of speed in the foreground bushes and good expression and a sense of dedication from the rider. The low angle helps as well.

Good job Sophie....bags of energy in that first one (that and the rider is on a bright blue Orange....bikes don't get any better than that )

Looking at the set on Flickr pretty much all of the shots look like the rider is on man made surfaces rather than negotiating obstacles on a trail. Was that bridge thing a temporary river crossing? (I hate when they put them in....pelting into a river at full speed is great fun).

For cross country racing I think there's a couple of main things to try and capture....the fitness side of thing with the riders grinding it out along a wide, easy section and the technical side of things where the riders have deal with obstacles like rocks, roots, loose surfaces, dodging trees, corners, jumps, etc, etc.....

Thanks! It was a small (but steep!) bridge over a deep gully, but the riders double-backed on themselves to go through the gully afterwards. I think I'd feel a bit more confident next time to find a spot further into the trail where it gets a bit more technical...I've spotted a race coming up in Wales that might be the perfect opportunity
