In part A we're asked to take pics at "every resolution and compression setting" available in our camera. My camera's best image quality is TIFF so should I be using this as the largest image size or should I use JPEG at the Fine (least compression) setting?
Good news is I have loads of images for the personal project now so plenty of work to keep me going

Hi Chris,
not sure about the answer to your question. What are the the dimensions (pixel wise) of the tiff and jPeg fine images? My camera does 3 different sizes of file and Fine or Normal at each size.
Glad you have lots of photos for your project. I just want to get a couple more, then finally decide how I'm going to print them. Should I print A4 or A3 and what sort of paper? Should the photos have a border etc etc...
..................oh, decisions, decisions!! Lisa.

I'd try them both - have a go at seeing, at 100% magnification, if you can actually see any differences between the best jpeg and the tiff - there should be but can you say what they are?

Ah... hadn't thought about different pixel dimensions and the effect they will have on my final results!
Sizes I have are:
2816 X 2112 2816 X 1872 (3:2) 2048 X 1536 1600 X 1200 1280 X 960 640 X 480
Quality settings are:
Fine Normal Economy Tiff
Each image size can be saved at any of the quality settings giving me a possible 24 size/quality options!
I was all set to compare 2816 X 2112 fine and/or Tiff with 640 X 480 economy, ie. the best available with the worst available.
Now I'm thinking I should be comparing 2816 X 2112 fine AND Tiff (good idea to compare both Tiff and fine Gary - thanks) with 2816 X 2112 economy and ignore the smaller image dimenions for this exercise?

I'm going to do A4. I don't think there's a need to go A3 unless you really want to. As for paper, borders etc. I think that's up to you and how much artistic presentation your subject requires

A3 creates logistical problems and has very few advantages as the tutor would be viewing the images on their desk not on a wall in a gallery.
I have all my prints made by a lab, always did in the past, probably always will in the future. I use inkjet printers at colleges when teaching and they seem to take a lot of care, management and expense - which I prefer a lab to take care of for me.
It's to an extent anecdotal but with the SPI and Critical Eye I get to see a huge range of prints from many people and 99% of the time if the prints are poor quality they are home produced and the exceptional ones are usually lab produced. That's not to say that excellent prints can't be made at home but it's my experience it's rarely achieved and if it is it's the result of a lot of effort and understanding on the user's behalf.
I have seen amazingly good prints from inkjets but I also know the people who produced them have become expert in the subject - it's certainly not the 'simple as A.B.C' process that the marketeer's would have us believe!

This is good news Gary, thanks. It justifies my decision to send my images away to printed. I also plan to print a couple of them at home just for comparison purposes to see the difference in quality
My printer, a Canon iP4500, is good but almost certainly not as good as lab prints
Hi Lisa, my project images have been sent to the lab for printing today but I'll be on holiday next week so I'll have to wait before I can see them I have 1 set done for part A and should get the other one done on holiday. Nearly done!! I'm aiming for the middle of August to get it all in the post to SPI. Hope my prints will be OK and I need to go to town and find a folder for them.
What's holding you up? I thought you'd be finishing about now!

I've been feeling like cr&p Chris. Had a wisdom tooth out and part of a root canal filling 3 Mondays ago, then the rest of the canal filling the following Saturday. I've seemed to spend a lot of time asleep for the past two weeks. Also, mine's an outdoor thing and the weather hasn't been very good the past several weekends. I went out on Sunday and got the last few pics. Now I've just have to get on and get them all finally sorted and printed.
Anyway, you've had more time than me so you should finish first!!
Lisa.

Its done! I've finished! I cant believe it!
Sent it off in the post earlier today. Hope its okay Wasn't sure how it should be presented so I went for a simple A4 display folder from Rymans.
I've really enjoyed the course and more importantly, I've learned a lot. Not just the technical aspects of digital image adjustments either. I feel my photography has improved as well because the need to take specific images for most of the modules has encouraged me to explore and think about my subjects.
I used to go out without any clear idea what I want to photograph. Now I can visualise what I want to acheive and go out and work on that particular idea
How are you getting on Lisa? Hope you've recovered from all your ailments

How come I've missed your post Chris ? - flippin' forum. Those red numbers are never where they're supposed to be!!
Well done Chris! Isn't it a relief to get to the end.
I've just come on this post to say I've finished too, just this evening. Got to get Elliot's address, then get it in the post.
I'm sitting here having a nice celebratory brandy and lemonade, then off to bed. Lisa.

I'll still talk to you Les.
The theme is Hardwick Hall and Estate. I'll put the pics up next week.
What's more interesting is, where are APChris' pics? has Mrs APChris banned him from displaying them in public?? Lisa.

Lisa, Chris - very well done to you both! Looking forward to meeting you in Oct. The Wye Valley has some serious drying out to do before then - seems unlikely as we head into September... Chris

Ah... well! I did take the pics but I wasn't happy with them at all I need a lot more practice at studio photography. I went with plan 'B' instead. I'll get them posted on my Flickr soon

Ah, I used Plan B as well - it always works.
Plan A was photos of Northumberland I took in Feb and June, but I decided Barney had probably had his fill of 'A view of Bamburgh Castle'. I'll put those on flickr as well when I finish sorting them out. Lisa.

Well here they are my final project images of Flickr
They document the cleaning and servicing of railway rolling stock overnight at Nottingham station and were all taken at night using a mix of artificial lighting and slow shutter speeds but thanks to the skill learned on this course, not too difficult to edit
