I've been giving some help to a friend's 16 yr old, who has a very good eye for composition and took to using shutter/aperture with no problem. He's been using a cheap and horrible compact, or one of my cameras.
He's off to Bosnia and later to Africa and wants to buy a camera. His specifications are: small enough to go into a pocket, good zoom, and using AA batteries as he is won't be able to recharge whilst camping in Africa. His budget is up to £150. Good image quality goes without saying, apparently!
Can anyone recommend anything please?

Why do people with expensive cameras say you don't need one to take good photographs

I have the previous A710is and can vouch for the quality of its output. Definitely a case of function over form as there's masses of better looking compacts but few in its price range get anywhere near its output. If I knew how I post some examples of available light shots it’s provided for me. The only thing I’d think of replacing it with at the moment is a G9. My fifth compact and by far the best.

I agree, wholeheartedly, with Chris's suggestion of the A720 but if the lad could squeeze (approximately) 30- 35 quid to his budget he should be able to pick up the SX100 IS which has a slightly larger zoom(8MP/10X Zoom/AA batteries) butDoes Nothave a viewfinderBut does have an Excellent screen for viewing even in bright sunny days
FWIW, I have sold a good number of these camera's to folks for a small(ish) holiday camera and for batteries for the trip I would recommend NIMH rechargeables but definitely take along a four(4)pack of the Engergizer AA Lithium batteries as a customer used them for his A710 and got approximately 1,000 shots from them ..... although,IMHO,I would somewhere around 400-500 shots is more realistic number would be around 500 pics and you can purchase them At These Fine(?) Retailers
Hope this helps somewhat and, regardless, have a great trip and come back with the extraordinary photo's
Cheers,
Jack

The Canon Powershot is a good choice.
A viewfinder may be essential. In Morocco I had to use the viewfinder on my A620 because the bright light rendered the LCD screen unusable. My mother could hardly use her Casio which did not have one.
You may find that something that works in sunny England, will not work in sunny Africa. Maybe some other members could offer advice about which LCD screens work in Africa.
