Just wondering whether others here make much use of Canon's Picture Styles. I've now downloaded the Picture Style Editor (quite a large download - bloated code or all necessary?), and slowly considering where next... So far, using mainly jpeg, the only change I've made is to reduce the Sharpness setting to the in-camera Standard Picture Style. I mainly shoot birds, things and places and don't do weddings. I use Breezebrowser for processing RAW to tiff etc. and PS6 for the limited post-processing I find necessary.
I suppose I ought to put camera on tripod and shoot identical scenes with a variety of Canon's Picture Styles, plus some more where I've altered the parameters. Would I be correct in assuming that one can invent new Picture Styles using their editor, and upload them to the camera? (via the USB link, I assume, if any.)

Not sure how to create your own profiles as I shoot RAW and leave it on faithful. The Canon RAW software recognises the profile and uses it but there's a drop down menu to change it...no need to shoot a load of identical pictures on a tripod.
I've no idea if other RAW convertors recognise the picture profile the camera was set to. Am guessing other RAW convertors use their own profiles?

I've created several custom B&W ones in-camera, and I use them quite a lot - not for the final result, but to see the effect on the review screen, which I find quite useful.

Why not just shoot in RAW, and then apply the picture style afterwards? That way you only need to take one picture, and can see the differences on the computer.

I've tried shooting in RAW and applying the styles as you suggest, but apart from the B&W options, they seem quite subtle on my (normally trusty) monitor. Perhaps I should try this route and see how they look when printed.
At the moment I can't see any difference to the changes I can make in Breezebrowser to what I can do in DPP, and now Picture Style Editor on the processing front. Picture Style Editor does allow me to save (and share) a style variation, which I don't think is available from Breezebrowser or DPP.

Thanks for your suggestions and hints. I've now done some more searching on the web, and have found this info from Canon.
Picture Style Editor info This is one of a series of pages relating to Picture Styles, and there's some downloadable files which I may try. That titled "Clear" could be worth checking out when I use my long lenses.

I have always understood that Pic. Styles have no effect on RAW. However, when shooting RAW, the small JPEG generated on your LCD is affected by what Style you have chosen.

The RAW file contains information as to which picture style was used, and this can be taken into account by the converter package. DPP is capable of using it, for example, but although it might apply the chosen style by default, it can be changed non-destructively. Other software packages may not be able to use it.

As I understand it Picture Styles is similar to the Parameters settings on my 20D in that the selected parameter/style is saved to the RAW files along with everything else and those settings are applied to the image as part of the 'As Shot' settings when opened using the Canon DPP RAW converter - obviously they can be modified according to taste as per normal.
Other converters will most likely ignore them - my old copy of RawShooter doesn't take the 20D's parameters into account at all...

Might be useful for digging detail out of shots taken in a desert sandstorm. It's horrid - or at least it was on the RAW file I tried it on.
