3rd Party Flash Guns
      #671371 - 26/06/2008 16:36

I'm looking to buy a good vfm flashgun for my A200, primarily for general use, I've been looking at the second hand minolta 3600 hs(d) flash guns that frequntly appear on ebay & they seem to go for between £70 - £120.

I've also spotted 2 other contenders; the Sunpak PF30x & the Metz 36AF-3, does anyone have one of these and are they A200 compatible (ADI,TTL & AF)?.

Dyxum does'nt have any reviews for either & other than WDC's Sunpak review I can't find any reviews/opinions. Given that both can be had for under £80 would I be better off getting one of these or a second hand 3600hsd ?.

Thanks in advance.

These Minolta flashguns will be FULLY compatible with your a200.

PROGRAM FLASH 5600HS(D)

PROGRAM FLASH 3600HS(D)

PROGRAM FLASH 2500(D)

Of course all the current Sony flashguns will be FULLY compatible.

FLASH HVL-F36AM

FLASH HVL-F42AM

MACRO TWIN FLASH KIT HVL-MT24AM
FLASH HVL-F56AM

Ring Light HVL-RLAM

I once had a Sunpak but was not impressed. I've never had a Metz 36AF-3 ... but at the price and with their reputation it should be compatible.

On balance I would try to get good second-hand example of one the Minolta flashguns. I have a Minolta 5600HS(D)and it is extremely good with both my a700 and a350.

If you can stretch to/find the 5600 you should. I have the 3600 and although it's fine I sometimes hanker after that extra power.

I've got a Minolta 5400HS with my A100, but have to lower the Ev otherwise pictures become overexposed. As a result, only use it when doing macro work.

Ref my earlier post, I had a good look around at what was available for my A200 and was quite surprised at the choice.

By chance I popped into Curry's yesterday and noticed a Sony HVL-F36AM for just £99.97 in their camera cabinet, which is cheaper than anywhere else I've looked at.

I can't see it on there web site though, so it may just be an instore price ?.

Hope this helps anyone else after a decent, but cheap flashgun.

It is a cheap and discontinued flashgun! The 56 model is also now discontinuedm, and unlike the 36, out of stock. The new 42 model is the only current model being shipped by Sony to stores, and the 58 is due in August. The 36 is a fair bargain.

The 56 is unusually versatile, and has functions which work (such as setting manual powers on the A350/200/300 when working in Aperture priority or Program mode) - the 42 locks out this function when mounted on these cameras, and we don't know whether the 58 will do so. If you can find a 56, get it.
