D80: LCD line in viewfinder
      #668736 - 19/06/2008 17:34

For some reason, a fine vertical line has appeared in the viewfinder. It runs from the central [-] to the bottom of the viewfinder.
If I change the focus point to the bottom one it remains, but disappears on the other 13.

When I turn the power off, it also dissappears.

The camera hasn't had any knocks or gotten wet or anything. I turned the grid on for some shots, and when I turned it off, the line was there.

On a scale of one to ten, how worried do I have to be over this?

Can I ask a question...

Are you wearing glasses when you look through the viewfinder?

I've noticed when I wear mine I get a line down the middle of the viewfinder. I've put it down to them having polarized lenses in.

It's part of the system for illuminating the AF points in the viewfinder - nothing to be alarmed about.

Hey - how curious! My D80 does the same but I had never noticed before (I usually have the grid lines set to "on"). But you are right, when the power is turned on, an extra bit of line appears from the middle [-] to the base of the screen.
Looks like the "worry factor" is therefore zero

Panic averted.

Thanks everyone.

Slightly off-topic but still Nikon DSLR and still viewfinder. The D3 has a switchable mask to show the DX coverage by "greying out" the border. If you remove the battery, the whole viewfinder goes dark; a tiny amount of battery power is required to keep the viewfinder clear and you only see the effect when the battery is removed, not when the camera is switched off.
