Hi, I've just got myself a 100-400 L IS USM for my 400d, (Taking Motorcycle racing photo's)
Just seeing if it's worth getting the 1.4 or 2X Extender? Reason being is that my wife bought the cheap Jessops 2X copy and the autofocus never worked that well, no surprise really. Will it work fine or not is the question, I presume it will, but don't want to spend £200 if it's going to be the same.
Cheers, Kev...

You will need a lot of light, it might work some of the time, but I would guess that for reliability you will probably have to consider manual prefocus. I think it is only the top end camera AF systems in the 5D and 1 series cameras that can really squeeze full time AF with the extenders.

No the AF will not work with a Canon 2x extender on a 40D or 5D with this lens. ( effective aperture smaller than F5.6 ) Most independent 2x converters will AF in good light, as they do not pass the effective aperture to the camera. The camera 'sees' the lens and not the converter so F5.6 with 2 stops less light. Some Canon extender users tape or varnish three of the pins on the converter to enable AF. For what it's worth, I stick to reliable manual focus, instead of risking slower or unreliable AF.

The 1.4x will have an AF issue too as the 100-400 L is f/5.6 at the tele end.... and I can't see the point of using an extender at all unless you have the trombone extended.

Note that this slows the AF down so much you can probably forget about it for action shots.
However perhaps you could prefocus (manually, or with slow AF) & take the shot as the subject goes through the plane you've focused on.

I've just bought a 1d mkII, I'm guessing that if I bought the extender now, I'd be happy!?

Some folks are never happy Jumping from a 400D to a 1DII is a big step.

Why? Bleedin' good idea not having scene modes I reckon. (or do you mean big step up financially?)
Aye it's a bulkier camera that I want to use but I don't think it's any more difficult to use in Av or manual.
As to the question about the AF working with the extender and a f/5.6 lens....probably be ok on bright days and high contrast subjects using the centre point but will likely just hunt on dull days. (my expectations rather than my experience).
