Bearing in mind I detest cameras that have 'features' it's the OM1/OM1n. Even now the viewfinder is astounding and that's about the most important thing to me - leagues ahead of the average DSLR - big bright and no flashing lights!

In one of my employs I had a choice of kit to take out and the Nikon F2 was lovely but after a few months of schleping F2 kit around London I used to take an OM1, 50mm f/1.4 and a meter. Rarely needed anything else and it made the job and pleasure not a pain.

So looks like the XA wins the rangefinder gong

with a close call but the OM4Ti just pipping the OM1/2/3's would you say???

Excellent - but what about other marques for say the rangefinders -- affordable stuff not fabulous Leica's etc

Canonets, Zorki's, Nikons etc etc???

NO!

The odd numbered ones will work without a battery fitted. The OM-3 (Ti) uses obtainable batteries and has probably the best meter ever fitted to a camera, identical to the OM-4 (Ti) switched to manual mode. The OM-1(n) meter is next to useless (especially without a PX625 battery, or a converter) but it does have a mirror lock. Got to be between the OM-1 and OM-3 (Ti).

So why the OM3Ti rather than the OM4Ti??

The OM4Ti provides the best of both worlds. I accept that it needs a battery for operation, but the electronic shutter is probably more accurate and reliable than the clockwork one. The OM4Ti variants are also better priced than the 3's, and the price difference would fund a few years-worth of batteries.

But I'll bet the mechanical shutter can be repaired/serviced long after all the spares for the electronic version are history.
