I'm looking into lenses for my canon 400d but I keep seeing lenses with EF or EF-S? What's the difference and which one should I be avoiding? Or can both be used on the 400d?
Be grateful for any advice on this.

Both can be used on your 400D, but only EF lenses can be used on full-frame cameras (i.e. 5D, 1D, 1Ds).
EF-S lenses are designed for APS-C sized sensors (smaller than full-frame) and thus cannot be used on full-frame cameras because they can't cover all of a full-frame sensor.
Some people (myself included) try, where cost permits, to avoid EF-S lenses because if you ever upgrade to a full-frame body, they'd be pretty much useless.
However, if you don't have such ambitions, there's nothing "wrong" with buying an EF-S lens... there are still some high-quality EF-S lenses to choose from. They also tend to be more compact and light-weight if that interests you.

Thanks sjaszczak, that really helps. I guess the best way to remember that is to think that the S stands for small lol.
I don't really have the ambition to go full-frame yet as I haven't yet made the most of the 400d (which I love to pieces anyway). I guess size does matter too lol. I'll bear it in mind anyway. Thanks again.  )
