photoshop elements catalogue backup
      #662550 - 04/06/2008 11:17

Hi All, this is my first post. I have looked to see if this has been dealt with.

When I backup with a full backup PS Elements 4.0 onto an external hard-disk the files are copied, but with new filenames, which do not relate to the ones I gave them on my puter hard-disk. So this means that I have my images backed-up, but - so far as I can see - without filenames, tags etc.

Is it that the metadata is there, but I can't see it. Or am I doing something wrong in the backup ?

No your not doing anything wrong and all the info is there, if you need to re install the backup at any time Elements will assign the original file names and all the tags and captions as long as you instal it from the organizer. The reason it uses numbers is in case you have duplicates with the same file name in different folders like say the same image for the web with the same file name.

Thank you. Good news is a rare thing. But surely this means that the files are copied onto the external hard drive, but the PSE itself - which in the event of retreiving these files would assign the original names to them - is on the puter hard drive. So that if I lost the puter then I would also loose the data which would restore the copied files.

I find good news hard to believe !!!

That's true of pretty much all backup software. You need to install the operating system and the backup program before you can restore the data. You could try making disk images with something like Ghost or Acronis though.

No the copied files and the data would be on the external harddrive then it would just be a matter of re-installing them to a new computer/or new internal HD after re-installing Elements.
