Looking to get a week or just over in Lincs/Notts in August. A couple of days at Duxford on the way up, visit family in Newark for a day, about 4 days to fill so any suggestions for landscapes/ historic sites etc?. Haven't chosen hotels yet so would pick one central so any photo ops....
(yes, I've tried google first but loads of places don't have pics on their websites and I got fed up with dead links etc)

Some strange people reside in Lincolnshire... Mind you, if you've got any old rubbish to get rid of you might find a buyer.

I moved here 15 years ago from Kent and still think it to be a strange place. Sadly lacking in culture, people who never want to get involved in anything much past work, drinking, eating, tv & sleeping. I must have been drunk when I moved here and I'd move tomorrow if my health were up to the rigours of packing the house up. Offers open to fair maidens who would consider a rescue bid lol ,

Hmmpf! What do yer want to do in Lincolnshire?
1) An attempt to break the world record for the longest lawn bowling.... well it so flat...and boring!
2) Boston Stump stumped me last time I saw it, and Boston is a dump now!
3) Ah there Lincoln, if you are interest for photograph of the Cathedral. Hmm, that's about it.
4) Nottinghamshire, not much either, there's Southwell Minister, Nottingham Castle, Newstead Abbey, Rufford Park, Clumber Park, Newark, eh....that's about it!

Spalding.... but at least in Kent (away from the north coast) there were castles, valleys, walks, trees, substantial history. South Lincolnshire is devoid of anything much with positive connotations. Weekend events in summer generally seem to be poorly attended and half hearted. I even avoid the hospitals here in Lincs and head for Peterborough & Addenbrookes due to certain ongoing issues.

Well yes, Spalding Boston etc are not very exciting areas. Come a bit west and there is a good camera club at Market Deeping which has several Spalding based members and Stamford/Oakham/Oundle area has quite an active cultural life, partly due to the big Public Schools I suspect. It depends largely on what you are looking for.
At least Spalding has easy access to the Norfolk coast (once you are past Kings Lynn traffic jam) with superb beaches and some of the best wildlife sites in the country.

Yep, access to Norfolk is somewhat of a godsend albeit the A17 to Kings Lynn is death alley and has to be one of the worst fast moving roads I have ever had the displeasure to use.

I was told it was lucky the populace of the Fens were so inbred - swimming is so much easier with webbing

I'm Lincolnshire born and bred (not inbred) and typically will fight for my county with any outsider, but love to slate it myself, if you see where I'm heading with this...
I live in a beautiful village (Wellingore) that actually resides on a hill, those that have never visited this limestone escarpement will probably think I'm making this up, but look at my flickr for evidence - not a particularly challenging hill, but a hill nonetheless!
Anyway, I'm in full agreement that Lincolnshire is quiet backwater with poor escape routes to motorways leading to the "smoke", and that the fens are to be avoided at all costs - people have been known to go missing in the 'Boston Triangle'. I feel sorry for that poor soul that lives is Spalding - truly the a*se of the world - except for the excellent Scalextric racing circuit ( knocks spots off Silverstone and easier to get in and especially out of).
Lincoln however, is a fantastic-ish City with a low crime rate, even with the cabbage-picking eastern block sorts that now populate the area adding a "bloody-hell which country am I in" feel to the place (bit like London - only safer!). The Cathedral and Castle area located in the rather proudly named Steep Hill district are very photogenic and some of the restuarants are pretty good too.
The Lincolnshire coast is most definitely the worst stretch of 'seaside' in the British Isles, but visit Donna Nook ( a place not a dodgy woman of ill repute!) in late winter and you will be rewarded with a great photo opportunity with the seal colonies.
Visit Lincolnshire...it's great!
For further advice on this enormous County contact me for an hones but slightly biased opinion!

If you think Spalding is bad you have obviously never been to places like Goole lol
As for photography I find most of Lincolnshire, the wolds included, one of the most boring places on earth coupled with a total lack of culture in the County arggggggg someone give me a gun.

Try Stamford and Rutland water - neither are far away and there some bumpy things called hills around there.
