But Dr David Haslam, of the National Obesity Forum, said it was "stretching it a bit" to blame the obese in the way.

"Really, it is discriminatory towards obese people. They are an easy target at the moment, but I think the causes of climate change and rising food prices is much more complex."

Yes, we are an easy target, but that's because we're so fat

I know several people who i would personally call of the clinically obese persuasion and its remarkable how many make up excuses as to why they drive less than a mile to work/the shops/etc... I have heard everything from genetics to "health complaints" ...even one person moaning at me "..its alright for you - you're young" as if ages was an excuse (I only asked why she didnt walk to work anymore - even she said she used to walk everywhere)

I dont think theres any excuse for obesity imo. I have been well overweight in the past but have never made excuses for it - I like(d) to eat and wasnt exercising much.

Can remember one contractor at work that was so fat he had trouble sleeping and breathing at the same time He didn't seem to enjoy it nor seem to be doing much about it but even then I don't think it's his fault for all the things wrong in the world.....you don't have to be fat to be greedy

It's a simple equation. If your energy input equals your output then there should be no problem.

However, some people have a decreased output either because they are lazy or clinically not able (eg some disability). Or some obese people have a fault with the input, may be the way their body handles the food is different (eg some hormone imbalance) or they are addicted to food. Food input stimulates the same areas of the brain as nicotine and cocaine, the addiction to food can be just as strong as other addictions.

I know exactly why I'm overweight, I don't do enough exercise (yes, I walk to the shops and take the dog out twice a day) and I drink too much. But (touches wood), I have not had a day off work because of an illness for over 5 years, nor seen the GP for well over 10 years. I believe you can still have some degree of health as well as being obese.

I know more skinny people who are more lazy, eat more and have more 'sick' days

Seems a bit of a tenuous link, compared to say the effect of materialism on the same fuel prices, the effect of the media psychologically selling us these foods and materials...

Its also really badly written, some of the sentences don't even make, er, sense...

And here's me thinking it was all down to overpaid under-worked quacks with nothing better to do than try and make everyone else's life a misery...

If certain areas of the medical 'profession' spent more time caring for peoples health and less time trying to devise new scare stories I reckon we'd all be a lot better off...........

Saw an interesting thing on the telly a few years back about how if you wanted a research grant all you had to do was mention "impact on the environment" in your proposal and money was far more likely to be thrown in your direction.

They also block escalators and get upset when you shove past them.
Anyone who allows themselves to get into that state is as ill-self-disciplinned as a crackhead.
Don't bother to tell me I'm opinionated; I know, thanks.

I thought you were supposed to stand still on escalators...
It's rather rude to shove past people.

I'm too fat btw. Just kill me now.

No, you are meant to travel at the speed of the escalator plus normal speed for running up steps. The system is well understood by Londoners on the Underground.

I wish it were understood by the rest of the population. Invariably it's people either in pairs standing side by side, or general f-wits who stand on the left hand side immediately behind someone standing to the right.

I am not a Londoner. I'm from Leeds and have never lived much south of where I am now. I just give Londoners credit for knowing how to use an escalator.

I'm not a Londoner either, and equally far away from London as Learning. In fact it's the ultimate irony that Londoners actually behave with a modicum of common sense on escalators while the rest of the country seems to leave their brains at the foot and wait for them to catch up.

Only if you're on the left hand side.

I really hate the tw@ts who shove past you just as you reach the top and then get in the way like a lemon, so the poor fat person who was lazily minding their own business lands right on top of 'em and suffocates 'em to death. Serves 'em right I have wet dreams of killing tw@ts in that way
