Pocket Wizards Vs SU800
      #655702 - 16/05/2008 00:23

Hi people

I am currently looking to buy a wireless lighting set up. At the moment I'm using my pop up flash to set of my SB800. I'm going to buy another SB800 and want to have the commander and not sure to get the SU800 or the pocket wizards. How many pocket wizards do i need to set of 2 SB800's? I've seen a video on you tube showing that the SU800 isn't good through objects whilst pocket wizards are. Can i use the pocket wizards for my Nikon D80.

The SU800 looks ever so simple though. I need to control 2 flashes and not sure what to use. Anyone got either one?

Thanks, James.

Pocket wizards attach to your hotshoe so they will worn on any dslr. To use 2 flashes you will need 3PWs, 1 per flash and one on the camera. The main difference is with PWs there is no ttl, you use the manual power on your flash, but they can go through walls and around corners and are generally more reliable than using the CLS system, basically they never misfire. Ive never tried the CLS system but ive got PWs and think theyre ace

Do you think it's easier for me to just get another SB800 and a SU800?

If you have a D80 then this should be able to control 2 SB800 flash units itself by changing the D80 flash setting to commander mode.

People may need to correct me but I believe the D80 can control two groups of flashes at different levels.

So you should not need to buy the SU800 as you D80 should do the job itself. Have a look at your manual at the commander flash settings.

The d80 can certainly control the 2 flashes without the su 800, dunno if they can be set up separately though although i cant see that being a massive hinderance. So try that first and see how you get on with it. Also what are you using the setup for as that could make a difference

I already use the D80 commander mode with 1 SB800 but you have to use the pop up flash which isn't great for long distances and your restricted with the angle to shoot with as the flash needs to hit the SB800 flashgun. I wanted to get an SU800 as i want to get really creative with wireless flash having 2 flashes on a tripod and being able to move around with the camera more freely. An example of wireless flash i've been doing at the moment but would of loved to of have another flash from the left hand side of the image. So far the Pocket Wizards seem better but alot more expensive. The SU800 looks like it's coming my way.

As far as extreme sports photography goes it seems everyone uses PWs rather than manufacturers in built systems. Check the photography areas on skateperception.com as theres loads of lighting advice on there aswell as strobist. Remember if your using PWs you dont need expensive sb800s, most use sb25/6 or sb28s which cost about 50-100 on ebay and second hand stores and are an excellent combination of build quality, power and compactness
