I don't use a grey card myself, the thought of placing it in and out of scene is just impossible!

But I do use a spot meter and aim for a - albeit presonal - 'standard' tone; at least one thing I kind of know where it will be in the tonal range of the print.

I'b very keen to hear you discussing the question over dinner with Ansell Adams - what would your line of argument be?

I wouldn't, technical discussion bore the arse off me. I'd just write this link on a napkin and ask him how his spam fritter was.
