I was in the garden photographing my 23month old yesterday evening, I had my E-510 and my EOS 5 film camera.
She's a little demon, and quick over the ground and I found the VF on the EOS 5 far easier to use with a moving subject.
Moving back to the E-510 the VF was tiny and dim in comparison. I'd always dismissed the VF complaints but now I can see where they are coming from.
The question is, how does the VF on the E-3 compare to a full frame camera?

Which full frame camera? They're not all the same, you know...
If it helps at all, having handled all four, I find the E-3 vf intermediate between the Canon 5D and 40D ... both of which are a considerable distance ahead of the E-510.

Thanks for the info.
I find the EOS5 is a brighter VF than my EOS 300v, both of which are far better than the E-510.

The E3 is better than my E1, but miles behind my OM4Ti. If anything, I would say that the E510 is marginally better than my E1, although I have only looked at it in a shop.
Don't forget that almost any zoom lens will be slower than a good prime. Kit lenses in particular tend to be at least two stops dimmer than a 50 mm f1.4 prime.
If you want a really, really good viewfinder, try a waist level finder on a medium format camera. You just have to get used to everything being the wrong way around.

I find the E3 finder bright and easy to use about on par with the OM4, but not quite as good as the 100% finder of the Nikon F4s & F3.
I did try the E510 at the Focus show and found it to be small and dim, the E3 is far superior

Is that with the 50 mm f1.4 or 1.8?

My standard lens on the OM4 is the Zuiko 35mm F2. I think I have a 50mm somewhere but very rarely use it.

My standard lens on the OM4 is the Zuiko 35mm F2. I think I have a 50mm somewhere but very rarely use it.
The 35 mm f 2.0 is a very nice lens, but it is a good bit slower than the 50 mm f1.4 in terms of viewfinder brightness.
The E1 viewfinder is bright with the Zuiko 50 mm f2.0 attached, but the viewing area seems so small after the OM4Ti.

FWIW I find the viewfinder on the E3 is miles ahead of the one on my old E-330. I find it offers good coverage and has so far been bright enough for my needs, although I have yet to use the camera in really low light situations.
