Why was I expecting to read about hydrogen powered cameras?

I want mine with a triple carburator, turbo and chrome wheels so I can ride my camera anywhere I want to take pictures.

Why not use the energy that falls on the sensor?

Seriously, though, the wind-up camera has its advantages - didn't we used to have clockwork shutters?

Solar camera? Already done - the Canon Del Sol, 35mm AF compact, circa 1995. Haven't seen one of those for ages, so maybe a valuable collectors' item now. Or not.

That was far from the first, too. There was a solar-powered Ricoh SLR back in the 80s.

I've got a wind-up torch that works pretty well. I can plug a mobile phone in to it and charge the battery for that, too, but it takes an awful lot of winding to get enough charge for a very brief emergency call. I suspect you wouldn't get many shots on a camera from a lot of charging, either...

So it would save paying the gym subscription ... a half hour workout on the camera winder would do instead

I used to have a job writing science and tech news articles for a dot.com startup, and there were often claims by fuel cell developers that the technology would be in laptops 'in the next 18 months'.

That was back in 2001....
