Well, you'd better wish me luck when I set about downloading it. I'm on a so-called 56k dial-up modem line, and it rarely checks out faster than 40k. Will just have to put my faith in FDM - seems to do a good job with other downloads.
You could always wait until it comes on a magazine cd/dvd, or order a copy from the microsoft site.

I'm more than a bit miffed that Microsoft released SP3 but then withdrew it due to compatibility issues, and then released a new final version a couple of days later. By which time, of course, I'd downloaded and installed the original final release. And, just to make it worse, the incompatibility is, as I understand it, with other Microsoft software components.
When did you get SP3? I got mine about 2 1/2 months ago (RC2). Never noticed any problems...but then SP3 was never going to be doing anything ground breaking to begin with.

My understanding is that it's only a rollup of the post-SP2 updates i.e. if you've been running Microsoft Update you should have everything in SP3 installed already.

I believe you are correct...or at least, that was the vast bulk of it....which is why I'm trying to understand what john_g means about these problems. There will have been extra updates that Microsoft decided to roll into SP3 that they hadn't put out separately via Windows Update.
To be honest, the limited impact of SP3 was the only reason why I took the plunge and downloaded the RC2 version back in February...thought it was pretty safe. It certainly hasn't done any extra damage to my already dodgy PC lol.

I got mine from a link to Microsoft in a Trusted Reviews article announcing that SP3 had been formally released. Microsoft pulled that release almost immediately and replaced it shortly afterwards.
From bit-tech.com: "It's official – the wait for Windows XP Service Pack 3 is officially over, with the update finally making its way to a permanent home at Windows Update yesterday.
Although the issue which resulted in the update being withdrawn from the Windows Update site – a critical incompatibility with Microsoft's RMS point-of-sale software – has yet to be fixed, a filter has been introduced that prevents the service pack being downloaded if you are running software affected by the bug."

Yep, I used to be on 2meg but the phone line just wasn't capable of supporting that speed and I never received it and so I downgraded to 1meg which it can support. I wrote to the manager of BT saying that I'd show him my collection of Jeri Ryan photos if he moved the telephone exchange closer to my house but he was most unreasonable and suggested that I should move closer to Jeri Ryan instead.............................in other words, sod off to Hollywood! Well at least now I know what BT stands for................"Big T*ats!"

I have just managed to load it on the 3 xp machines I have/look after and it was a right pain!
It was fine once it decided to actually start downloading but this took 6 or 7 attempts to get working-maybe because the servers were overloaded.
The only differences I have noticed were that I have lost a memory error message on exiting a cad program on one machine and a new error message when trying to load some software (one of them a ms product !)-it loaded ok and does seem to work so far.

Lol...ask again in a couple of years yeah?
I've probably got about another 6-12months use out of my current PC before I build a new one. Then I guess it'll be Vista for me despite the fact that I am still happy with XP.
The next Windows on will have to be much better than Vista (*cough* not hard maybe *cough*) for me to upgrade.... but hey, they might have sorted out Vista by then so I might not bother!

I use a programme called abf outlook express backup, to back up all my e-mails, settings, favourites and rules etc.
LINK www.abf-soft.com/outlook-express-backup.shtml
But after having installed sp3 it no longer works.
I have contacted them and they suggested getting the latest version, I did, but still the same.
Looks like sp3 is coming off my pc, it may mean that I wont get any more updates from MS, but what the heck. As long as I can back up my stuff, I am not too worried

Reckon XP never mind service pack 3 will eventually be coming off all our PC's Gordon as support for it eventually dwindles and Vista takes it's place as the new kid on the block. Just wish I could get more excited about Vista but I can't as it doesn't seem to me to offer any significant advantages over it's predecessor, XP, and a lot more disadvantages in that it's much more hardware demanding!

What do others use to backup all their contacts, email, message rules etc from outlook express 6, or do you just back up the .dbx and .wab folders/files?
I may try other progs if there are any.

Ever since I downloaded SP3, I can't surf the web for whatever reason that is. I don't want to restore my machine again as I have work to do. Thank goodness, I have Mandriva on another partition and I can surf the web with no problems whatsoever.
How strange! I've installed it on two of my home computers now without any ill effects on my web surfing or anyrhing else for that matter! What browser are you using? I'm using IE7.
BigWill
I'm using Firefox. I did a full system recovery on my machine and whenever I do I install Firefox imediately. I did the update and it seems fine now, very strange. Since I used the full hard drive for the recovery, I had to repartition the drive and I now installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the other partition with the sound problem fixed on my Toshiba. That was one of the things that made me go to Mandriva on the Linux partition, but now it's ok except I can't use headphones it won't play any sound through them. I hope they get this fixed for the Realtek ALC861 devices (which is what it is on the Toshiba) because Ubuntu Hardy Heron so far is looking great. The firewall comes on from the installation onset and Firefox under it lets you know imediately if a site is suspicious and blocks it. The only thing I haven't installed is the 3D desktop which on Mandriva is installed by default.

I'm holding fire on sp3 until Avid qualifies it for their software, probably when I go to Media Composer v3.x. Dave

Did you get to the root of this?
I have a similar problem - my wireless connection keeps disconnecting after apparently 'losing' the password. I need to to enter the password each time to reconnect.
I have tried a clean XP install and SP3 update and 2 different wireless adaters with the same result each time.
I consider myself reasonably PC literate but this has me stumped!
Any clues anyone?
