Just noticed that service pack 3 for Windows XP is out now and I'm in the process of downloading it. (60 odd megabytes! ). Apparently this is to be the last one for good "old" Windows XP and we're all going to have to get to like or lump Windows Vista in the future! What was wrong with XP anyway I'd like to know.......................was probably Microsoft's most sorted OS ever!

I'm still happy with XP and intend to jump Vista (like many did with ME - remember?) ... just hoping what ever comes after Vista will be less aimed at "pretty" and more at "functional.

I have XP on the lappy and Vista on the desktop. Although I'm a non-techie I can't really tell the difference between them. Both better than MSDOS and Commodore basic IMO

Oh that's easy, Vista is the one that's twice as big and takes about twice as much hardware and processing power to get the same results as Windows XP!

God, don't you just hate these smirky types with fast broadband connections! Me, I'm on Orange 1meg (Can't even get 2meg in Broughshane.....................apparently the steam pipes they use to carry the internet to here have sprung a leak and created a geyser comparable to "Old Faithful" in Yellowstone Park! )

I'm more than a bit miffed that Microsoft released SP3 but then withdrew it due to compatibility issues, and then released a new final version a couple of days later. By which time, of course, I'd downloaded and installed the original final release. And, just to make it worse, the incompatibility is, as I understand it, with other Microsoft software components.

Well, you'd better wish me luck when I set about downloading it. I'm on a so-called 56k dial-up modem line, and it rarely checks out faster than 40k. Will just have to put my faith in FDM - seems to do a good job with other downloads.

Ever since I downloaded SP3, I can't surf the web for whatever reason that is. I don't want to restore my machine again as I have work to do. Thank goodness, I have Mandriva on another partition and I can surf the web with no problems whatsoever.

I'd wait until they attach it to the cover of PC mags or even ask for it on CD from Microsoft if you're on dial up Malcolm. It'll take an age to download otherwise!

How strange! I've installed it on two of my home computers now without any ill effects on my web surfing or anyrhing else for that matter! What browser are you using? I'm using IE7.

You could always wait until it comes on a magazine cd/dvd, or order a copy from the microsoft site.

When did you get SP3? I got mine about 2 1/2 months ago (RC2). Never noticed any problems...but then SP3 was never going to be doing anything ground breaking to begin with.

My understanding is that it's only a rollup of the post-SP2 updates i.e. if you've been running Microsoft Update you should have everything in SP3 installed already.

I believe you are correct...or at least, that was the vast bulk of it....which is why I'm trying to understand what john_g means about these problems. There will have been extra updates that Microsoft decided to roll into SP3 that they hadn't put out separately via Windows Update.
To be honest, the limited impact of SP3 was the only reason why I took the plunge and downloaded the RC2 version back in February...thought it was pretty safe. It certainly hasn't done any extra damage to my already dodgy PC lol.

I got mine from a link to Microsoft in a Trusted Reviews article announcing that SP3 had been formally released. Microsoft pulled that release almost immediately and replaced it shortly afterwards.
From bit-tech.com: "It's official – the wait for Windows XP Service Pack 3 is officially over, with the update finally making its way to a permanent home at Windows Update yesterday.
Although the issue which resulted in the update being withdrawn from the Windows Update site – a critical incompatibility with Microsoft's RMS point-of-sale software – has yet to be fixed, a filter has been introduced that prevents the service pack being downloaded if you are running software affected by the bug."

Yep, I used to be on 2meg but the phone line just wasn't capable of supporting that speed and I never received it and so I downgraded to 1meg which it can support. I wrote to the manager of BT saying that I'd show him my collection of Jeri Ryan photos if he moved the telephone exchange closer to my house but he was most unreasonable and suggested that I should move closer to Jeri Ryan instead.............................in other words, sod off to Hollywood! I have just managed to load it on the 3 xp machines I have/look after and it was a right pain!
It was fine once it decided to actually start downloading but this took 6 or 7 attempts to get working-maybe because the servers were overloaded.
The only differences I have noticed were that I have lost a memory error message on exiting a cad program on one machine and a new error message when trying to load some software (one of them a ms product !)-it loaded ok and does seem to work so far.

Lol...ask again in a couple of years yeah?
I've probably got about another 6-12months use out of my current PC before I build a new one. Then I guess it'll be Vista for me despite the fact that I am still happy with XP.
The next Windows on will have to be much better than Vista (*cough* not hard maybe *cough*) for me to upgrade.... but hey, they might have sorted out Vista by then so I might not bother!
