OK, so vaguely sky related ... on Tuesday evening (May 6th) there is a rare opportunity to photograph the planet Mercury very close to a very thin "new" Moon, with luck this should make a nice photo, there's not many people have even seen the planet Mercury! It's almost always too close to the Sun to see clearly, this is an unusually good elongation and it's specially good luck to have the Moon apparently in close proximity to it.

You need a flat NW horizon and (obviously) a clear sky. Mercury, and the Moon, will become visible about 5 degrees (a skinny fist's width) above the point on the horizon where the Sun went down, about 30-40 minutes after sunset. Binoculars will help you find them earlier, but do not start sweeping whilst the Sun is above the horizon, you could easily blind yourself.

Mercury will be visible using much the same method for about another week, fading gradually before diving back in towards the Sun.

A 200mm to 300mm lens is ideal for making the image. A tripod will also come in very handy!

Good luck....

Interpretation [Re: APchris]
      #651816 - 05/05/2008 18:51

There are some crackers entered at this very early stage, loads of sunsets, etc., but my favourites so far are AntSmith and APchris for their unusual, and out of the ordinary, interpretations with their reflections.

Should be a tough one for Damien this month.

I think my top three at the moment are:

Hotblack
RadoAds
Neil_L

...it's looking like it's going to be a good month...but for me anyway, I think Hotblack is going to be hard to beat.

Thanks Bob, I do try! ...but I think Ant's 'Skylight' is a whole world better than mine. Then there's Mark's 'Staggered Sunset', Glyn's 'Storm Power' and MartyG's 'View to a cloudy sky'. All cracking interpretations

hehe

The 2 cars that had to wait behind me on the single track mountain road when I saw the sky, sreeched to a halt and jumped out and started snapping might not agree with you :-)

I did give them a cheery wave when I was done though.

It's not quite the same as I re-edited it slightly (crop and saturation reduction)
