Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can help suggest some good locations to take photos of lighthouses. I'm situated in Essex so Ideally East Anglia/South East Coast (Kent,East Sussex) although I could look slightly further afield if need be.
It would be good to be able to take the lighthouse from various positions aswell as being able to get close up to the lighthouse.

I'd suggest places either near or on the coast 
No, seriously... Try googling the county you want and the word lighthouse.
Doing "lighthouse kent" brought up loads, with photos and directions

Ok thanks,
I have done some "googling" and found Trinity House website which lists all working lighthouses around the country. However there isn't much information from a "photography " point of view ie access to good viewing spots etc. As they only list the working lighthouses I was hoping that some people may know of other locations and which lighthouses are good subjects from a photography point of view

It's a bit of a trip for you but how about Flat Holm Island in the Bristol Channel? It's a good day out.

No info specific for Photographers, but this site - http://www.lighthousesrus.org/Europe/England.htm - shows a photo for many which might give you a clue.
I've no idea how comprehensive it is, but there are definitely some there that are not "current".

If your going to come that far there's Nash Point which is one of the few lighthouses you can go around, or even further there's Whiteford lighthouse

How about Dungeness in Kent? The lighthouse is on land and can be climbed, so perhaps it's not as wild as others, but Dungeness is a photographer's paradise, featuring Derek Jarman's garden (Google it if you don't know about it) as well as a lot of other atmospheric and bleak coastal stuff.

Quite a few lighthouses are now owned by the National Trust. Souter Lighthouse (near Sunderland) is open regularly during the season, including the machinery room, and sounds its foghorn on occasions.
Some of the old Lighthouse Keepers cottages are also rented out as holiday accommodation (I believe there is a website somewhere) including the lighthouse at Swanage, although that one still operates.
Both of the above are quite photogenic IMO.

I don't know if it's too far or not what you're looking for but Spurn Point is an amazing place for the nature as well as the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself doesn't function any more, it's been a shell since the mid 80's (my mum used to be a friend of the keeper back in the early 80's so I went inside when it was still working) but the coastal erosion means it's a really special place, few people go there these days and it's a mile on foot from the car park to the Point but there is so much wildlife there and its quite an amazing feeling being so cut off - the peninsula is so thin now you feel like you can touch the sea on both sides (it's less than 50m wide now)

Spurn is a fabulous place for photography if you don't mind the drive up there. You get two lighthouses there, although one has had the top replaced with a water tank.
If you don't mind re-treading the footsteps of countless other photographers before you, you could try Dungeness in Kent, Happisburgh in North Norfolk or Orford Ness on the Suffolk coast. If you decide to visit Orford Ness you should work out in advance how you plan to reach it. I think the usual method is by local ferry from Orford village, but it looks possible to walk from Aldeburgh if you're feeling energentic.
Two final possibilities spring to mind. There's an old wooden lighthouse on stilts at Harwich or you could try the Needles on the Isle of Wight.
None of my suggestions are very original I'm afraid.

Sorry to hijak this thread, but I've been trying to research my Grandfather's wartime history in the British Army. I know he spent time with his anti-aircraft battery on one of the islands in the Bristol channel during WW2. I believe it was Flat Holm or Steep Holm but I don't know which. I know what unit he was with (can't remember it at present but I could dig it out). Would you be able to point me in the direction of anyone who could provide any background information?

I've been to Orford Ness, using the NT ferry. I don't think you can walk there from Aldeburgh. There's a great big area at the Northern end that's fenced off - and don't understimate the size of the place - it's BIG.
