We have a new competition, run in association with EISA (European Image and Sound Association) in which you can win the Professional Camera of the Year 2009. Obviously we haven't voted yet to determine what that camera will be - but you can be sure it will be a good one (last year it was the Canon EOS 1D lll).
The theme is Global Warming and you need to submit a series of 10 images. The top three from the UK will get published in AP in June, and the winner goes on to represent the UK at the European finals - a bit like Eurovison! The overall winner will go to Germany to the Photokina show to collect the award.
Go to the competitions page to find out more details.

Unfortunately this one's only open to people that live in the UK.

It would take either a brave or a foolish man to bet against the D3. I'd love to win one, but I take it that for a competition like that the competition would be fierce.

Nah, it'll be a Canon again - EOS 5DII / 3D maybe
It's usually a recently released model that nobody has really tested to any great extent anyway.

It will be a camera tested by the EISA members, which includes us. It has to have been tested by at least 10 of the 16 magazines on the Photo Panel - so a 'blad or digital back is unlikely. The nomination and voting process takes place in June - so don't look too far ahead. All you have to do is look at the professional cameras we've tested in the last 8-9 months and guess what might be coming between now and May to see what will be in the running.
Also remember that loads of people will think the competition too stiff - which means you have a better chance of winning. Many of the EISA magazines don't have reader submissions as good as those we get in AP. Judging from the standards in the monthly competition here I'd say you all have a very good chance.

Funnily enough I was thinking exactly that! I don't do the whole competition thing so it won't affect me, but I couldn't help but feel that it's a very tough brief to shoot in only six weeks. I'd want a year to put together a set of ten pictures for that, or several months at the very least. [Not to mention a good travel budget! ;-)]
Ah well, best of luck everyone. :-)

Agree with you Huw. Six weeks to compose and shoot a ten-photo series showing Global Warming. Unless you've already got shots that show it, the middle of April isn't really the time to shoot for it

Exactly - the circumstances really seem stacked against it - certainly in the UK at any rate. But I suppose there's scope then for inventiveness and pushing the boat out a bit - sort out the men from the boys maybe. Tough though - very tough.

Don't be such a Jessie. Set your camera to 1/60sec and all ten shots can be had in less than a second.
Global Warming can be represented by all sorts of things - even on a small scale. The causes, the effects, the evidence, how good it is, what is being done about it, the myth, the protests, the coverage etc.

Would a heat haze over Oxford be adequate? (seen from ten viewpoints, perhaps.....)
The problem with winning such a prestige camera is affording the supporting lenses and other kit afterwards. It is bound NOT to be a Pentax this time around.

Very tricky to do this in the time... Total lack of ideas here!
If they are really bothered about global warming maybe they should have made a rule that the photos have to be taken within walking or cycling distance of your home! No carbon footprints allowed May the fittest person win (certainly wouldn't be me!)
I'm really struggling to think of anything ! Not many polar bears floating off on fragments of ice here I did take some pics of skinny cows on the marshes today but I don't think anyone would get the link with global warming, even though there is one (allegedly)...

Same here. Absolutely no idea. And it's bitterly cold out there which is not going to help. Haven't seen the yellow ball in the sky for a long time.

Sorry Bettina, was feeling depressed, borrowed it and haven't put it back yet. Give us another hour... quite nice and toasty down here now ;-)
Doesn't global warming mean we get more extremes in weather.. so piccies of freezin' weather and storms equally applicable? I think GW will/is starting to pervade many aspects of life (taxes, recycling, carbon trading, e/migration etc) so plenty to go at - but as Clod says, some connections may be too subtle for the judges, but if it forces people to think...
(ha ha, nice sig Clod, was a great series).

A quick question - are you allowed to enter pics which have been published before? Or do they need to be totally new images? It's still bl**dy cold out there in spite of the alleged global warming, & there's not long to shoot new stuff...

Yes, Mr Hopper. There is nothing that says it can't have been published before.

[fingers crossed behind back mode] You know, I'm not always right [/fingers crossed behind back mode] but I was having a chat with some of my EISA buddies last week and surprise surprise their readers thought the competition was very difficult...and there have not been the millions of entries expected from all quarters (if you know what I mean). Our deadline is a lot later than in other countries so some of them have closed already. Nod, wink, nudge.
I know that many of you are excellent photographers, and you are a lot better than you give yourselves credit for. You are also streets ahead of the readership of some of our counterpart publications in Europe. With a little bit of thought I'm fairly certain an AP reader could win this competition. I'm not saying that because I want to be able to gloat over Austria and the French, but because I believe it is true.
If anyone wants some help with ideas or editing or anything send me a PM and I'll give you all the help you want. (I mean that too)
I am going to the EISA conference in a couple of weeks time and I know I will be in trouble for allowing a late deadline, so it would be handy if you are thinking of entering if you could let me know (via PM). I'll not hold you to it or hassle you for your pictures if you decide not to go ahead in the end, but it will give me an idea of how many entries we'll have.

I've also just noticed that other countries have stated the submission should be '6-10 pictures'. So I'll change our rules too.
