Bl&$dy hell!! whose got the course paracetamol bottle? 'bet Chris has taken it to Morocco with him!  spent hours last night trying to get my new supposedly 'supa-dupa' printer to print properly but they kept coming out too dark. Yes, I tried moving the brightness slider but then the light bits were too bright.  Anyone got any tips? monitor calibrated with Spyder 3, CS3 and Epson R2400 (and if you say 'get someone else to do it' I'll throw something!!  ) Lisa.
PS anyone know where the monitor profile fits into all the ICM stuff??

Being new I suppose you are using Epson inks. Are you aso using Epson papers?

Yep - thought I'd better start with some things consistent till I get it sorted, then I can look at the cheaper options afterwards.  Lisa.

I have a Canon ip8500 8 colour printer and only use genuine Canon Inks and paper, never have any problems with profiles etc.......
Why make life complicated for my self is what I say.
For general text printing my wife does all that on my 8+year old Epson stylus colour 880 with compatible inks.

I agree Gordon, I've got an old Epson Stylus 750 and just do general text on that with one of those fill up thingies you get from the supermarket. Lisa.

Oops! Yes I have the paracetamol bottle with me. Sorry. I'll see if the First Choice rep can send it to you on the next flight.
Have you searched the print section of the forum? I seem to remember reading about dark prints from a new Epson in there!
My old Epson 890 has recently been retired and replaced with a Canon i4500. Haven't tried printing pics on it yet as i'm still trying to introduce it to my home network!

yes I'm just working my way through the Scanning & Printing forum - as you say there are some useful bits in there. Wasted a couple of trees and loads of ink last night without much progress.  Lisa.

 Hmph, you're just trying to make us jealous now, Chris! And succeeding... As for the printing, Lisa - no idea, sorry! Hope you get it worked out, how annoying. I take it you've tried fiddling with the printer options dialogue box settings? Listen to me, making out like I know what I'm talking about, I haven't a clue about printing! I used to have an Epson A3 'quality' printer, but it was rubbish, so now I've got a cheap crappy one, and it works much better. I bet I never worked out how to set up the other one properly. Now, if I need an A3, I just take it round to the local Spar shop, and they photocopy it for me. How sad is that?
That being said, for chrimbo, Mr Tal get a dozen of (his) fave pics printed up A3 at Staples and frmaed them (how sweet is that?)... trouble is, as he was trying to keep it a secret, and doesn't get involved with 'techie' details like file sizes etc, he copied all the pics I'd resized down to <1Mpix and got them printed!  And guess what? They look pretty good... I only realised when I pressed my nose up to the glass... A case of 'less is more' perhaps?

Well, I think I've got it more or less sussed out. The problem was all to do with that thing called 'colour space' - I was using different ones for the photos and the printer and hadn't got the warning messages set up in CS3 to tell me when I opened a pic. So everything is being done in Adobe RGB now - ok so some of the colours in that colour space aren't reproducable by the printer, it seems to work! I can't get on with PS managing the colours so the print drivers are sorting it out. I tried ICM advanced but the pics come out looking rather flat, so for the moment colour controls are ticked, and with a couple of tweaks the pics are coming out as near as dammit!
Sooooooooo, the next thing is borders using multiple layers. I can manage one colour filled layer, change the canvas size then put the pic on top before flattening. I'd like to put a thin white line round the pic before having the coloured border which I think would use 3 layers, but I keep getting in a mess. Any ideas anyone?  ta muchly, Lisa.

On photoshop CS when you do a "canvas size" at the bottom you get a "canvas extension colour". Select black (or whatever colour you want) then add say 2 or 5 pixels around the photo.
Then do another "canvas size" but this time select "canvas extension colour" but choose white or another colour. Add say 5 or 10 pixels around the photo.
Hope that helps. There are other ways of doing it too...

Hi Lisa, great to hear you've sorted the printing 
To put lines around my pics I use the stroke command. Edit/Stroke (I think its in the edit menu - I'm on the laptop and can't check at the moment)
You need to select the whole image first, Select/All, then go to Edit/Stroke. In the dialogue box you can set the thickness of the line in pixels and where it is placed ie. inside the selection (overrighting the edge of the image) or outside the selection (making the image a few pixels bigger. You can also choose the colour of the lines.
To make two (or more) lines of different colours just keep repeating the above actions so to place a thin white line around the image with a wide black border outside that - select the image, go to edit/stroke choose white as the colour, pixel width to 2 and inside as the position and click OK. A 2 pixel line apears around the image. Now repeat the steps but this time choose black, 6 pixels and outside and a 6 pixel black border is placed outside the first white line.
