It looks like we'll be having a week in Menorca in August. We're going with my wife's family (they'll be nine of us ) so I should be able to easily bugger of on my own for an hour or two each day.

Has anyone got any recommendations? Must sees that kind of thing? Experiences they'd like to share?

TIA

Um....er.....um.....

Not the most photogenic place I've ever been, it must be said. Mahon is nice enough, and some of the archaeological remains are fairly interesting, but it's basically unexciting in my opinion. Of all the places I've ever been on holiday, it's bottom on my list of places I want to return to - it's not an awful place, just dull.

I'm surprised at that. I was there for 2 weeks a coupe of years ago and had a really enjoyable holiday and got some fine pictures.

I would say hire a car for the full week so you can get around.
Pictoral Highlights:

- Mahon was nice
- Cap de Favatrix well worth a visit
- Cap de Cavalleria is grat - lots of photographic and other diversions
- Es Grau - top beach and nice nature reserve nearby - good for all the family and nice pics if you are prepared to walk
- Ciutadella is another good town - nice shopping and architecture.
- Good panoramas from Del Toro
- Nice little fort at Fort Malborogh (if you like that kind of thing)
- Fornels - there was a good market when we were there and a walk to the tower on the headland is worth while
- es Castel bay was nice in the evening (good food too)
- We had a very pleasant (if long) walk to a bay on the south coast- can't remember it's name perfectly - something like Macarella.
- If there are any on, and you are feeling brave go to one of the local festivals and get in close to the rearing horses - but take a cheap lens (I used my 50mm lol) as it might get a horses hoof in it. Still go if you are not feeling brave - just stay back!!!
- The bronze age sites have some magnificant stones - best shoot at the end of the day

To see the sort of thing to look out for see my pics of Menorca 2006

TBH, it wasn't even on my list, but we're getting the accommodation paid for and it'll be nice for my daughter to go away with her cousins. We haven't had a 'hot' holiday since 2 became 3 so my wife's really looking forward to lounging by the villa's pool with her sister.

Thanks for the link Phil. I've only had chance for a quick look through but I do like the sound of the festivals.

I had a similar thing - it wasn't on my list at all, but my wife wanted to go (the local breed of horses is very interesting apparently) In the end I'd go so far as to say it's one of my most enjoyable holidays. I'll certainly be going back in the next couple of years.

We'd done amalfi the year before - which was my idea, so off we went...

Ah now the almalfi was the last holiday we had before 2 became 3! We went for our honeymoon and had a week in Positano just at the top of the Almalfi coast and then 4 days in Rome. I loved italy so much I booked a long weekend for us in Sardinia about three months later!

Well I hope your experience is closer to Phil's than mine.

Not made it to Amalfi yet, but I love Italy. A lot.

Well, I'll try my best! As with all family holidays compromise is a certainty, but as long as I can get up early and disappear for an hour or too I'll happy and my wife tells me that I'm always chirpier when I've done so so she'll be happier too.

Away from photograhy, does anyone know if there's any good diving there?

Great images Phil. I can safely say that I will add Menorca to my list of 'acceptable sunny destinations' for later this year.

I thought I'd resurrect this seeing as we're flying off on Friday. Anyone anything else to add?

I'm sure I will thanks Bawbee. I'll be away from work and hopefully able to kick back and relax a bit, well as much as you can with a two year old. Hopefully I'll get some photography done. I don't think I'll be able to take my tripod so no golden hour landscape work for me, but I'm sure I'll find plenty to catch my eye.
