On my lunch break on Saturday (Mar22)I decided to *play around* with a K200D with a DA 18-250 lens attached to check out the zoom range. The results are as follows and all I did was resize to 600x400 @ 100dpi, then to "smart sharpen" and, in a few cases, use the "shadow/highlight" feature in PS CS2
PHOTO'S -- @ 18, then 250:

These pics were not, of course, made for any precision testing -- I leave that for/to the experts -- but just to show the zoom range of the lens which,BTW, I was quite impressed with
Cheers,
Jack

Am I correct in saying that the k200D has the same sensor and electonics as the K10D?
These photos look OK at first glance. You have the full sized images, so can better tell if there is any shortcomings with colour fringing or edge softness.
Thanks for posting them. The zoom range is impressive foe just one lens.

They look good Jack. Am I right in thinking this is the Tamron lens badged by Pentax?

John.

The K10D and K200D use the same sensor. The electronics may or may not have been modified, but there won't have been any huge leaps in performance.

Hi David,
As John mentions the sensor is the same but I would say there is difference in the operations/electronics -- shooting 'jpgs' (leaps to mind) as the K10D is unlimited jpgs where as the K200D is limited to four(4) jpgs which is the main difference I noticed However, I was using a San Disk Extreme III (1GB) card and was doing a good bit of continuous shooting and (with the speed of the Extreme III card) there was very little lag time
As for purple fringing and that other stuff .... send me a PM with your email address and I can send you the full image (resized to 4x6 @ 200 or 300 dpi)
Cheers,
Jack

Thanks for the offer Jack, but I will not trouble you as I am not intending to buy this lens.
I'm still after the Sigma 10-20 f4. Cannot justify spending nearly £600 on the Pentax 12-24!

The current SRS price on their website for the SMC Pentax-DA 12-24mm is £499.

Hi David,
You, of course, mean "not intending to buy this lens .......... right now"
As for the ultra-wide, as I may have mentioned , I have the Pentax DA 12-24/4 and it has been a fantastic lens for me and, if you look above my post, you will notice that John has been able to save you an additional £100 on the pricing of the Pentax lens Of course, I could save you some more £'s but it would involve an airline ticket to a very rainy place, albeit not a this particular moment .
Cheers,
Jack

Thanks both of you, but I have today ordered the Sigma 10-20 from warehouse express for under £300 including delivery.
A friend of mine has been using this lens for some considerable time and is genuinely completely happy with it. I expect I will be also.
One has to draw a line in the sand somewhere, or else I would end up broke very quickly! Especially as I have only recently bought the Pentax 100mm f2.8 macro and the 540 flashgun.

Hi David,
Well done and I look forward to seeing some nifty 'ultra wide' pics and, hey, the money you saved on purchasing the Sigma lens can be put toward a ticket to Vancouver
Cheers,
Jack

I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with it, it may be on my list once my K10d arrives Does it have the HSM motor? I believe Sigma now do an HSM version for Pentax.

Not listed on the Sigma website, I believe and this one does not have it. I'm not really bothered as the mechnical focus system on the K10D works fine on ALL my other lenses.
Silent focus is not really too important on this type of lens, not going to use it for wildlife with razor sharp ears!!
I will try it out asap. WHE have Emailed me to say it has been dispatched already, so might be here tomorrow....Wow.
(The WHE price was only £289.99 - £305 to £309 elsewhere)

I use this lens a lot, and really love it.
check out my flickr site for some images, please feel free to leave any comments, good or bad.
The humber bridge shots are bad examples but only due to me sharpening too much in photoshop.
