A while back there was a thread on a monopod from amazon that was more of a walking/hiking stick that was also a monopod. It was very cheap, and I think it was under a tenner.
I was wondeing if anyone could remember what the make/model was as I have had a look and can't see it on amazon.

Leki make one which I would personally recommend.

Leki and Brasher both do models. I have a Brasher Hillmaster Guide pole but the screw thread is actually longer than the depth of the tripod mount on my D70s so it's not al that secure.

I use a Leki Sierra Photo with a Manfrotto 234RC head.
It's a great pole, but I don't know anywhere that sells it for under a tenner . . . 
Something approaching £40 is more like it - look here

Saw one at Focus last month
Gitzo G1560 Monotrek - Monopod / Walking Stick for Hiker
But it was definately more than £30 I think it was about £85 here

Kohla also make walking poles to which a camera arm can be attached.

Yes, I think it was the Hama 8 star monopod I am remembering here. I had it in my mind that it was more of a walking pole too, but its not. I remember that price though!
I am off walkling in Dorset for a few days. I recently forked out for a 190X manfrotto tripod and 3 way head. I love the tripod but really didn;t bargain for the weight of it! It made my back ache just with a walk down the river so I can't see myself doing proper walking with it over my back!
The alternative I have is a very flimsy jessies tripod which almost defeats the object of actually having a tripod its so flimsy. I am off on Sunday so I have left it all a bit late!

I suspect you will find that the Hama device is very flimsy too. It has many more parts than the Leki Sierra, but is only about 80% of its weight. With all those joints and such light weight I would be surprised if it's very stiff.

If you want a cheap and fairly sturdy Monopod I can recommend the Hama Star 78, my wife got me one for Christmas, it's obviously not in the same "league" as a manfrotto, but for light / infrequent use it does me perfectly; it's light, strong, has a QR plate, spirit level & has a very useable length, mine also came with a very handy carrying bag.
You can get them from either ebay or Amazon etc for about £20, but if you check out argos;

You'll see it's only £14.99, a bargain.

I use a Gitzo G1569(?) The last number is uncertain since part of it has rubbed off. This includes a small ball head with a sliding cover. I had to modify it since the rubber handle slowly worked itself down the shaft. A bit of wire and araldite solved the problem. I know that it is not good enough to need to modify something as expensive as a Gizo but nothing else came close. Hopefully more modern offerings will have the problem fixed at source.

I too have the Brasher it is very light and strong.
I have no problem with the screw it measures 6.8mm, the female screw in my 40D is 8.8 mm deep.
But there are other things to consider... the height of the pole fully extended... and that the camera is mounted landscape.
Both problems can be resolved by using a head with quick release. for me it gives just that bit more height and can be adjusted for portrait mode.
The alternative is to use a real monopod as a walking pole,and why not? I often use my professional Manfrotto one this way.
