You've shown us this earlier, Richard. I think it's an absolute cracker and definitely a strong contender.

Not to worry Chris, my (probable) entry will bring down the class average

Cheers,

Quiraing [Re: APchris]
      #620200 - 03/03/2008 09:14

The reason I chose my entry was because it has a degree of abstraction which would have been impossible working in colour. The Quiraing are one of the most easily recognised features of Scotland's scenery, and the shot was taken from the exact same point hundreds or thousands of others have stood when taking their pictures.

Using the channel mixer with a predominantly green filter effect has resulted in an image which doesn't have the soot and chalk look popular in B/W landscapes, but also an image which isn't immediately recognisable. The abstraction only works in B/W, and the image can even be (at a glance) seen a Hokusai-esque wave crashing on cliffs. The scale has become lost in B/W, adding mystery.

That, for me, is the point of using black and white - abstraction, and the way it causes you to look at the details to find the 'truth.'

I don't care how you did it, it's lovely. Nice tonal gradations are far more popular than soot and chalk, with me at any rate...

Depends on the image. The Quiraing is suitable for just about any treatment IMHO!

It's actually the same approach I took for my February entry, FWIW. Gives a result a little reminiscent of SFX, which is no bad thing in my book.

Think you are being a little too defeatist, a little too early Fen!!! Although I admit it is a tremendous B&W landscape image... it doesn't necessarily mean that it will appeal to the judge as much as an equally competent portrait, action shot or still life image.

Having so many great images submitted so early only raises the challenge for me... but then again, I like a good challenge!!!
