I've finally taken the plunge.....

....and bought a Yashica Mat 124G that was loitering in the local(ish) camera shop. 6x6 here I come. I saw it the other week and it smiled at me from the shelf. With the money I got for my birthday last week I decided to treat myself.

Good on you! The Yashicamat is a lovely little camera. I enjoyed mine a lot (though it eventually got sold to help fund a D2H). The manual is available on the web somewhere, if you need it. (I forget where for the moment, but let me know if you can't find it.)

Thanks Huw, but mine came with two manuals (I don't know why), a case and boxed etc. They even threw in a free roll of film to show me how to load the thing having never used MF before and all for the princely sum of £85.

Ah those were the days, bought a new 124G back in 1983ish great camera, if a bit limited I could not afford a Mamiya C220. Shot a few weddings on it, makes me laugh every time I see a post asking what kit is needed, how many lenses, how many gig of memory card etc. is required to shoot a wedding, it was so much easier then.
Sold it after a couple of years to buy a Mamiya 645 for the interchangeable lenses.
Good luck and enjoy those BIG negs. it really is a different way of thinking and viewpoint.

Thanks. It seemed a good and cheap way to try out some MF. If I really get in to it then a Bronica or Mamiya is definitely on the cards (for the interchangeable lenses).

Hi Dan. I was given a roll of Neopan 400 to practice with and I've bought some FP4 and Fuji 160C* to be getting on with.

I'll be taking the first couple of rolls to be dev'd and contact printed early next week. I think the meter may be underexposing slightly so these practice rolls should give me an indication.

* I thought I'd better use something with plenty of latitude first before I start slinging Vevia through it.

Thanks but I don't like ebay and I'm not prepared to spend the time finding out who's legit and who isn't. A few years ago I think it was a good place with a good community. Now it's full of scammers and fakers. I'll give it a wide berth unless I'm absolutely desperate. I just bought my first lot from 7DS but I may look around at other suppliers.

Well done for getting into MF. I'm sure you won't regret it.

If your'e going to use Velvia you might be better off with a hand held meter anyway (preferably a spot meter). Some people also use the spot meter on another good film camera. (I have dont this with the spot meter on my OM4Ti before).

As for film supplies, try Mathers of Lancashire (highly reccomended) and Discount Films Direct.

Thanks Nigel. I think investment in a hand-held meter is probably the best option for me as I will still be carting around my DSLR as well. I'm not going to lug my old Nikon FE around just to use as a meter and I know the meter in my DSLR won't be correct for film.

Why will the meter in the DSLR not work? I am not saying it will work, but asking why not. I assumed that say ASA 100 on a DSLR was a way of relating the sensitivity of the camera to somthing that is relative to the available light and not CanonASA or NikonASA but good old ASA. Time to play with the EOS5 and 5D see if they agree.

Yeah I'd second the handhelf meter option. I use a cheap Sekonic and (L-308bII) it does the job. I think the meters in a lot of older cameras degrade or something, my old canon is the same.

I echo your sentiments with ebay, seems some people on there are more than happy to take your money and then even if they're legit they wouldnt leave feedback (I think its changed now though). Ebays gone down the pan.

Try Robert Whites as well when you go looking. They often flog off stuff like velvia and provia when it nears its date. Provia 100f is great, but with MF you might as well try the 400 as the larger format really benefits. Ilford pan F+ 50 film is a nice mono film to try, I'd almost say it was the velvia of the mono world.

I believe that the meters in DSLRs that I have (D50, D200) are calibrated to underexpose slightly in an attempt to stop highlights burning out.

That may not be totally correct but I do believe that they behave differently to meters for film cameras because of the sensor.

I'm sure I read something along those lines in AP a few months back but, not thinking about getting back in to film at the time, I sort of ignored it .

If so ... it's just what you want for Velvia ... which has a digital-like small dynamic range, or lack of latitude if you prefer that terminology, and (like other transparency films) looks awful if you let the highlights blow.

Seriously, though, you've got to learn your meter(s). They're not all the same - even apparently identical ones with consecutive serial numbers - but the results you get in the real world (outside a testing lab) are likely to depend far more on the way you use them than they will on differences in calibration.

And I agree absolutely about Pan F - but don't underexpose it!!!
