As per todays news anouncement. I am not sure how Leica see the M8 given the issues that have arisen since it's launch and maybe, just maybe it is going to follow the DMR into obscurity despite the comments (below)regarding long term upgrade pathways. Every camera on launch is the greatest thing since sliced bread and promises abound regarding capability and long term support. Few of these promises are met. However, should the comments regarding a full frame rangefinder come to fruition then perhaps Leica will have at last a machine to which all (or nearly all) the promises apply. For the sake of history, quality and that genuine feel for photographers needs that Leica have displayed more than most I hope it arrives, I hope it comes in at a price under that of the 1DS 111 and I hope it is the success that they desperately need.

The good news is that the latest firmware upgrade has finally nailed the auto white balance, it's almost a completely different camera as a result. Big improvement.
The only thing that's really missing now is support for SDHC cards; after that, they can effectively say the M8 in its original form is done and turn their attention to the future.
I'm quite sure they are learning how to do digital and software in-house where previously it was sub-contracted out and if they can make the M8 full frame, that has to be good news.

Considering how close the rear element of a rangefinder lens can be to the sensor I would have thought that it would cause serious design problems with a full frame version. After all, the lenses are getting pretty far away from being telecentric as it is and this already causes problems with the M8.
Perhaps a new design of sensor with a flat surface would be needed, but I haven't heard of anybody planning that approach.
I would have thought the SLR design has proved itself much nore compatible with the requirements of digital.

I agree, I feel certain that cranking up the edge/corner correction to compensate for the sensor vignetting is not going to work well enough on FF, so a flatter sensor design where the photo-sites/pixels have a wider field of view must surely be the design objective.
Of the current lenses, the 21mm Elmarit-M ASPH is the problem child - the 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar is much more tele-centric - but the M8 handles it well. FF is going to make things rather more difficult.
There are real incentives to doing FF - getting back the fast wide angles and being able to say you produce the smallest FF digital camera.
