For those coming to the meet in Cambridge on Sunday 24th June I was going to spend a day in the city beforehand to see what colleges, attractions, routes etc would be available.
As you know, Cambridge has many colleges with unique features, but some may be inaccessible (exams or simply close on Sundays) and it's simply not possible to do them all justice in one afternoon, so I was wondering if we could have a poll just to gauge the level of interest and we go to the most popular. Most colleges (which are open to the public) do charge an entrance fee (about £3). Most of the colleges are close together and the first four on the list are virtually next door to each other. But visiting Cambridge is not just about the colleges so I think we should save some time for looking at other areas such as Great St Mary's church where you can climb the tower and get a brilliant panorama of the city. Then there's all the activity surrounding the river and parks. So much to do and see

Of course, when you climb the tower at Great St Mary's, you have a wonderful view over King's College Chapel. The area around Silver Street and the river is worth a visit as is Jesus Lock (there is often a jazz band playing on the green near the lock on Sunday afternoons in the summer), the Botanic Gardens, the Judge Institute (old Addenbrooke's Hospital), the Fitzwilliam Museum and the American Cemetry though this is just outside of Cambridge but well worth a visit on the way home. I can't see much attraction in Churchill College though.

Hi,
I dont know if the situation has changed recently but I found that there was a ban on most indoor photography even if a service was not taking place, and you could not even buy a permit for amateur use.

Hi Alan, I'll check with the powers that be. Trouble is each college is different with a very different set of rules. For example as we live in Cambridgeshire some don't charge us entry, but some do
Edit: Just had a reply from Queens (that was quick as I only sent them the email 30mins ago!) and photographs can be taken anywhere as long as they are not for commercial gains or any 'private' areas (ie staff and students quarters). The Gate Staff have been informed of our visit and will keep a look out for us, not sure what that means
Cheers. Will you be joining us?

Just timed out on the edit, but St Johns and Kings have just responded too (I'm impressed, can't be very busy as it's exam time!?). St Johns just query the use of tripods, I suspect most us won't be lugging a tripod round the city anyhow. Kings is fine, except no flash in the chapel.
Trinity; as long as you use a Minox or similar spy camera that's fine
See, exactly the same questions and three different responses All adds to the character and individuality of the colleges I 'spose

Hi,
Thanks for the invite, unfortunatly I will not be around, but if you get a different date in the future, I may be interested. When I was refused permission to take pictures last time, I did make a formal complaint in writing on the basis that it was just for hobby use, and thier offer to sell me 35mm slides was of no use. So I am glad that you have had some positive responses. The worst was kings, which had loads of no photography notices every where, which I was asked to obey, but loads of overseas tourists were using flash and getting away with it since they said thay did not speak english.

If somebody has a burning desire to visit another college other than Queens, Kings or St Johns let me know. I now have written comfirmation from these three, all allowing pictures to be taken in the buildings but I would refrain from using flash and using tripods (Kings were quite clear no flash and St Johns no tripods).
Most of the colleges do welcome small groups, but it is evident they do like some warning. So do let me know and I'll sort something out. Cheers.
