Dear Forum Members
Here are the results of the Forum’s March photographic competition.
This month the theme was “Macro/Micro” and it was amazing to see so many entries — clearly close-up is more popular than I thought. It is worth noting that this is almost like an open round, as the subject can literally be anything as long as it is close up. This makes the judging much tougher. And, I will make a point of saying, as always, that this is purely a personal choice. Lastly, a big well done to you all.
This time I have chosen five Highly Commended’s and one outright Winner. They are as follows:
Highly Commended: daveish182 — Tulip close
Flower in abstract. This way of photographing flowers has become more popular over the last ten years and it is understandable why. You can get some really beautiful shapes and colours and this is a particularly nice example. The light coming through the flower makes the colours really glow. Nice.
Highly Commended: Ian_A — Peacock feather
This is not an original composition, but it is extremely well executed. Reminds me of something you would see in a book in the 1970s — and that is a compliment. Very clean, could hang on anyone’s wall.
Highly Commended: bagpuss — Arum lily
This is a very nice study in the style of Robert Maplethorpe. Mono depictions of flowers are not new, but they certainly have become more appreciated in the last few years. Taking way the colour allows the photographer to concentrate on shape and shade. Nice one.
Highly Commended: robert1ho — The Frozen sun
Clever composition that sees something wonderfully abstract in something completely normal. Makes me think of the Beach Boys’ song The Warmth of the Sun.
Highly Commended: NRoberts – Savage Lily
This is a really nice approach to photographing a stamen. I love the dreamy aspect of the out of focus background colours. The composition may be a little too far left — maybe a central position may have been better, but it’s still a lovely shot.
Winner: Stevet — Butterfly
This is a very nice composition. There are other pictures of insects among the entries, but this is not only the best, but it shows nature in its full beauty and grace. This is a very hangable image.
Conclusion:
Well, that’s this month completed and I hope you enjoyed taking part. Well done to all those who took part and I look forward to judging the Candid/Street round at the end of this month.
All the best

Wow Garry, that was quick. As usual, worthy winners all and well chosen (although I do think the fact that my entry was of a bench should have counted for something!)
Well done everyone, some tremendous pictures here.

Hi I cannot view the results because I get a message saying that the security certificate has expired. What is that? It gives calm.ipcmedia.com as the issuer of the security certificate. Robert

Go Window>Activity and you'll find some URLs in red saying "Bad Server Certificate". Select the URLs and tell it to "Ask Permission" and it'll let you view them. Alternatively click on the links in the post I maade directly after Garrry's post above.

Well done everyone, particularly Steve T, and thanks again to Garry for adjudicating.
I have to say macro work isn't my cup of tea, but it was worth the effort entering, for I learned something: that a flatbed scanner is a pretty good substitute for doing macro photography if you don't have any close-up kit. The feather was my first attempt using it, the second being the flower I posted in the Appraisal gallery.
Garry said about my feather shot:

This is not an original composition ...
Well - that's the way it landed
If it does look like something done previously then it must be chance or a subliminal influence thing, I can't recall seeing anything like it before. I really must get out more ...
