Epson V700 vs V750 Pro
      #456592 - 23/03/2007 21:50

I just read a rather interesting review of the Epson Perfection V750 Pro over HERE and I think anyone considering buying a scanner for 120 or 5x4 should read it.

I found it interesting that the guy said if he had to make a choice between the 700 and the 750 he'd go for the 700. It appears to him that some of the extras offered (software excluded) and features used were very minimal in difference. He also found the Fluid Mount to be a pain. I also found 2 other website reviews stating the very same - newtonian rings and bubbles seemed more prevailent with the Fluid Mount that without.

The lens coating that was supposed to improve clarity on the 750 also didnt seem all that much better than the standard in the 700 according to the review.

Anyway, just found it interesting (along with the fact they havent improved the film carriers) and thought I'd share.

Sadly, I have to agree. My V750 is absolutely amazing, but after trying fluid mount I think it's not really worth of additional cost. V700 would do the job.

On other side, I do really enjoy Silver Fast Ai (full version) and monaco calibration sw.

Don't look for differences between V700 and V750. They're beasts!

I have to be honest and wonder why they dont provide a soft rubber roller for the Fluid Mount? Surely the idea is to get it consistently level in the first place with the mylar, and you're never going to do this by hand. I might give it a go much later (only thing is I'll wait until its warmer as this will be a scanner in the bedroom - the only place I have - dont want the fumes killing me)

For the price I have to agree they are a bit of a bargain compared to dedicated 5x4 equiped scanners. I'll be putting in a purchase of the 750 hopefully this week if I can.

How did you find the film holders. I've seen nothing but complaints from the really serious users, lol! I'm tempted to scout about for some professional enlarger film holders if they turn out to be better/more practical.

Film holders are a bit flimsy. No excuses! Far away from what whatever I was using before. There are some 3rd party products available so hopefully this summer I'll get time to test them.

When you get your scanner, don't forget to 'calibrate it' by changing height adjusters! Can sound as a cheap trick but results are really worth trying.

This holder will hopefully solve problems:

Yeah I had read both those sites on the film holders and that was why I wondered what your view was. The better scanning holder looks alright but I think I've seen it over here for less. If I dont get the results I want I may invest.

The height thing is pretty interesting. I read about it on the V700 review. Mind you I will be using the Nikon 5000 scanner I have for 35mm so that wont be a problem - think that has an AF system for the film in there.

I've placed order for Dual MF Film Holder and 120/220 ANR Insert from betterscanning.com. So far very good communication and my items should arrive by end of this month. I'll keep you updated.

Cool.

Well I got the 750 model a little while back, but rather annoyingly havent been able to use it as I havent had a system set up suitable for it. Hopefully this weekend I'll give it a whirl as I need to sort some stuff out.

If you scanning 120 films, get the MF Dual Film holder. It's fantastic!
