Got to here and the third course image to manipulate, and although I know that it's all subjective, having carried out various adjustments in curves following the tonal segments part on P34 of the course book; using layers for the curves adjustment, turning it off, and comparing with the original, I cannot see an improvement. Is it my eyes?????

Depends on what you've done with curves, can you see the difference here?
If not you need to look a bit harder - it can be tricky at first - try applying the adjustment to a small selection so you can compare original with adjustment at the same time or make a copy and adjust them side by side. Take your time studying them,

many thanks for that tip, hadn't thought of comparing it that way, although when pointed out it's one of those that should have been apparent.
