Hello melvins_mum,

come along and have a chat with us all on the Intro to Digital Imaging forum - it's supposed to be nearly the same course after all. We have a 'mini lounge' where we discuss things of absolutely no importance. Lisa.

I think that I will be very interested in doing this course. However, I'm still waiting for the details to appear on the AP website to see what's included in the course!

Hi everyone, I started reading the manual 3 days ago.
Its the first time that I have had to think about what to take pics of. Hope it gets easier.

Re: Anyone else out there doing this course

I'm on the older version of the course but its similar. I took LOADS of shots for Mod 1 - just like you I didn't feel that they were up to submission. Eventually I bit the bullett and sent them off - my thought was if you are already very good then you don't need the course - I do! Good luck with Mod 1

I am going to make another attempt to get my pics for mod 1 this week, and then decide which ones to submit. "This is harder then going to the Dentist" .Thanks for the advice.

Hi, I'll be doing this soon as well!

Just waiting for a few extra details and then I'll be ready to go, so the numbers will be building, looks like a really good course and it's good there will be people to discuss it with too :-)

Re: Anyone else out there doing this course?

Yes- I can see I'm not alone after reading all these posts. Got my course content about three days ago. It looks very demanding and will force me to do a lot of photo-soulsearching.

Have just one question at present. Why was it decided that for the Diploma in Digital Photography-that we would be submitting our modules on pen drives as opposed to straight forward email?

All the best to all of you in the same boat as I am!!

Re: Anyone else out there doing this course?

Hi, I’ve experimented with email in various educational situations and it never works in my experience and is certainly never ‘straight forward’. Its fine for an essay but as soon as images are involved – boy does it go wrong!

Image sizing is probably the weakest aspect of most digital camera users practice and we found that, even after clear guidance, too many students submitted 30mb+ files (print resolution PSDs for instance were a favourite) for each image.

My email allows 10mb per email so the average student might have to send me anything up to 30 emails for me to get their submission. If we could guarantee every student knew how to size and save an image in an appropriate format it could work, but experience tells me that is not going to happen any time soon! And of course we couldn’t logistically have one system for those that could and one for those that couldn’t. The pen drive got round that problem.

Hope that answers your query,

Garry

Re: Anyone else out there doing this course-re:pen drive query

Hi guys,
got this course for Christmas (After lots of hints!) am now in the same boat as everybody else wanting to produce pics i think are good enough for module 1 and not sure what the required standard is. I'm a born again club photographer who has discovered the digital darkroom and was looking for a reason/driver/stimulus for my photography that I used to get from inter-club comps in the late 70s early 80s. I am trying to resist the temptation to just scan lots of old negs/slides for module 1!!

Andy here from Jersey in the channel Islands, I have just received my course paper work and this is the first time I have logged on to the forum. I am looking forward to chatting with my fellow students on the Diploma course, and I must admit I am a little nervous.

Hi
I've just received my pack too and plan to go out this Friday to see if I can get some good shots. I hope I'm write in thinking that the subjects for module 1 are open to a little interpretation?! Or maybe I'm trying to be a little too creative?

Bounce flash using white brollies

Hi to all!!

Am working my way through 1st chapter of course book. Haven't yet submitted any pics for module 1. But I have a question re: bounce flash. I recently attended a John Clements Nikon Creative Lighting course(I have a D2X camera) and was wondering which technique produces the most effective/pleasing/ shadowless lighting for portraiture:

1. Bouncing the flash from a SB800 flashgun from the inside surface of a white brolly or
2. Using the SB800 gun to diffuse the light through the brolly. This second technique was demonstrated by John but I didn't get the chance to ask him?

Comments anyone?

Re: Anyone else out there doing this course

Hi, thought I'd introduce myself here as I'm not allowed to start a thread yet I've sent Elliot a PM so hopefully will soon be up and running.

The course materials have just arrived and I've just read the module 1 assignment. Does anyone have any tips on what is expected for the notes? The booklet seems to imply some form of self-assessment and refers to chapter 1 of the book. As far as I can see though chapter 1 doesn't have any guidelines for this part of the assignment. I've probably missed the obvious but any hints would be welcome.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Regards

Dave

Re: Anyone else out there doing this course

Hi Dave
My view is the self assessment is a very important part of the course module, it is a way of showing what you have learnt and how you have or intend to apply it to your photography. Of course not everything goes according to plan and it is important also to highlight this and explain where things worked well and where they did not. The tutor needs to be sure that you have understood the course module, this is demonstrated partly through the images produced but also through an explanation from you of your understanding. I hope this helps. Best regards and good luck
Andy

It does thanks Andy. Since reading your posting I have looked at the first picture for my Module 1 submission and started to write down what I was trying to achieve and why. It's not something I've done before and whilst it wasn't easy it was very illuminating. Thanks again for your thoughts. Regards

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the course. What Andy has said is correct, but try to keep your evaluations short and sweet. I think they suggest no more than 100 words.

Good luck with the course.

Hi Everybody,

I've recently received all my course paperwork and am itching to get started though it does all look somewhat daunting especially when I have seen the astonishing quality of some of the work in the galleries. When I've plucked up the courage and have got the muse I'll start on module 1 and if I get very brave, and can master the technology, I might even post some of my work on flickr!

Just started myself, have got three iqages left to do for Mod 1.

Only problem I seem to have is the slowness of this site, it cannot just be me, but other sites load far far quicker than this one - or could this be due to the fact that I am using firefox???

Hi, I started this week too. For mod 1 I am planning on submitting a couple of existing shots but mainly ones shot specifically for this module over the next week or so. Aiming to get them submitted by mid-May - what about others?

Looking forward to working with you all
