Decisions, decisions

I will shortly be making an upgrade from my Minolta 7D to a new A700 - this is a no-brainer. what I am having difficulty in deciding is how to go on the lens side. I want to 'slim down' my current set of lenses (shoulder problems) and therefore I have two principle choices for the wide- to mid range - either the 16-80 Zeiss T* or the 16 - 105 Sony. It's what to do after that that I'm having the real problems with. I would like to cover from 80/100mm up to 300 or even 400+ (if possible) but again, weight is an issue. There seem a whole range of available lenses out there but is anyone able to give some realistic advice on what are good optics in this area? My interests are varied (eclectic even) and include landscape, nature, Architectural (thought about the 18-250 but need decent verticals for example), motorsport and Record photography. I will retain a Sigma 105mm Macro (stunning quality on the 7D). Looking forward to a healthy debate!

I would like something that covers 80-400, but alas no one makes one any more in our fitting, you may get a Tokina somewhere though second hand.

I have Sigma 10-20 EX, 18-50EX, 28-300, 400 and Tamron 90mm.
I am thinking about getting rid of my 28-300 and 400 in a p/x deal for the 50-500ex BIGMA

Re: Decisions, decisions

I would suggest the 16-80mm Zeiss and then wait a few weeks for the Sony SAL-70300G 70-300mm G SSM to become available. You say you already have a macro so for the rest that leaves just the need a very wide like the Sigma 10-20mm plus, for extreme tele, the Sony SAL500F80 500mm F8 Reflex - if you're feeling adventurous.

Re: Decisions, decisions

Thanks and a couple of questions - I have heard rumours about the overall build quality of the 16-80 Zeiss; is this borne out in people's experience? And also, what is the likely availabilty of the 70 - 300 going to be (when and any guide prices yet)? Thanks again for the responses.

70-300 G £563 at DigitalRev.com not clear whether it is in stock. The CZ 16-80 is mainly plastic which some have criticised but there seems no reservations about the optical quality.
