A300
|
|
Hi All
Does anyone have any info on the A300 with regards to price, when available & specs, please, or is it simply a 10mp A350 ?. In particular I'd like to know if it's likely to have DOF preview & mirror lock up.

It's simply an a350 with a 10mp sensor. No MLU or manual aperture stop-down (DOF preview) but with the small viewfinder screen there seems little point in one anyway. They used to be okay on the bigger screens of 35mm film SLRs but with digital I think it easier to take a shot and review it on the LCD screen.

The only UK retailer carrying it, for the moment at least, is Jessops. It's £500 for a kit option, and information can be found here:

Interestingly this is the price I paid for an A350 kit with 18-70 from Digistor.

Thanks for the info, although going on the price that the 350's available for that seems a little pricey to me, it being a Jessop's price does'nt help (high normally anyway). IMHO.;)
I'd have thought it would retail for about £400-£450, given the prices of the A200 (£350'ish) & A350 (£500). I guess time will only tell.

At the moment Jessops are the only sellers of the a300 in the UK. Seems like some sort of deal has been done

This is the case. Sony confirmed the A350 but were unsure as to whether they would be releasing the A300 in the UK, before an exclusive deal was struck with Jessops.

Thanks for the info Mat & Roger.
IMHO by making it an exclusive Jessops deal Sony may have shot themselves in the foot, who's going to pay jessops £500 for a A300, when you can get a A350 for the same price from elsewhere, surely a lower priced A300 would have increased Sony's coffers As a person that rarely goes above a 7x5 print the A300 appeals more so than the A350, i also gather the A300's quicker.
I suppose you could compare it to the D40 & D40x, some would say the D40 is better, not only that but there was a significant price difference between the 2.
Will WDC be doing an A300 review, or is there any point ?.

We're not quite sure whether we will be reviewing it as yet, though obviously we'd like to see what differences there are performance-wise from the A350.
As for why anyone would buy it, there is, as you've pointed out, the faster burst rate. Many people have speculated that noise would be better controlled, but having compared the A350 with the A200's 10.2MP sensor, and seen how similar noise control is between the two, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't in fact the case.
There's also the case of processing times being different and files sizes being different, but I suppose the main concern would be the overall operational speed.
