Set the self-timer to the 2 second delay. When you press the shutter release the mirror will first lock up then 2 seconds later the shutter will release.

If you don't have the original operating instructions one is available (in PDF) <here> for free download.

hi roger, thanks for your reply.so,the only way to get mirror lock up is with the 2 sec self timer?i know how to do that, but reading togs postings on other forums, there seems to be another way,but not necessarily for the alpha.i just thought there was a way of doing it other than with the self timer....

None I know of, apart from the cleaning function which raises the mirror, but obviously not what you want What do you want to do with MLU?

i read in a magazine recently,to use the mirror lock up facility whilst taking a certain shot(can't remember which type though),and i'm sure the exposure was quite long....or can you use the 2 sec self timer with long exposures?please excuse my ignorance as i'm very much in the learning stages.

Yes you can. The 2 second timer lifts the mirror (to minimise any vibration) then, after 2 seconds, initiates whatever length of exposure you have set.
