New Poll - Picture stories

This week's poll is more of a survey than an opinion gatherer. To tie in with our Photo Documentary special (AP 19 April - on sale Tuesday 15th April) we're asking whether you have ever shot a picture story before. I suppose we all have unconsciously, as holidays and events are often captured with a beginning, a middle and an end, but have you ever actually planned to cover a story, working out what pictures you are going to take, and then editing them to put together a finished set?

If you have, what did you shoot? And if you haven't, what would you like to cover? What would be your dream story?

Go to the Home Page to take part.

Thanks all.

Damien

Oddly enough I went to the Marathon yesterday looking to get 4 pictures to show the preparation, the fun, the painful but happy end and the onlookers.

I am planning a similar thing for my AP Diploma final project for old Bomber Command airfields....

Not quite as detailed, but similar I suppose.

I'm actually in the middle of one right now about Hill Farming in the Yorkshire Dales through the seasons, birth to death for sheep, taking more than one year to get the contact and the photographs I want

No. I've never set out to tell a story. Reportage/documentary photography is something that has so far eluded me. I'm in awe of those proficient at it though.

Closest I've come is reportage style coverage of a friend's wedding but I wouldn't say it involved much planning other than stocking up on HP5.....

I admire those who can plan and execute a proper photo-story but I suspect I lack the dedication required.......

Re: New Poll - Picture stories

I did plan a picture story once but was not on location long enough. A place I visited regularly while working in the USA was Avery Island. Apart from being the home of Tabasco Sauce, it is also home to Jungle Gardens, a 250 acre nature reserve. It has such wide population of wildlife, from Alligators and Egrets (known locally as "'gators 'n' grits"), turtles plus some wonderful flora.

I would have liked to have covered all 4 seasons. I arrived in April, many thousands of egrets, and left in August, very few egrets. The alligators theselves were fascinating to get up close to, though not too close.

One day, one day..... Avery Island

Not sure if it counts but, when walking in the Lakes for example, I usually take pictures with the idea of telling a story of the days walk ready to upload to my website. This will include pictures of the start and end of the walk along with pictures of everything in between.

Not something I'd ever done before, but this week's copy inspired me to try it out.

Went out recently to shoot a building demolition. Seemed to go quite well (it did indeed get blown up).

As for planning the shoot, I did a recce of the area and decided where to shoot from. Also took my step ladders to get over the fence shots.

One other photo story I've recently completed is the before and after shots of the Bullring in Birmingham

Bit more planning with this one as I needed permission from the centre to shoot. Also needed to get aerial maps from the 90s and the present day to compare locations.

Current project, though it'll be a long one is some new construction in Birmingham. So far shot the foundations, but hoping to slowly capture the rest of the tower going up.

Will this include pub pictures?

I've photographed many weddings and the photos were planned to tell a story of the day. However, I haven't tried it as a project for fun, but have been inspired to try by one of the best issues of AP that I've read.

Re: New Poll - Picture stories

I have become intrigued with Audio Visual presentations and as a start I have put together selected groups of photos as a slide show using the Adobe Acrobat presentation option in CS3.

I have covered such things as 'a day at the seaside' (Southwold), my grandson's 5th Birthday, the Orchid show at Wisley and our holiday in the Loire Valley.

These offer an 'easy to watch' way of showing photos to friends and family and are a doddle to put together, including adding titles.

I intend to buy the Adobe AV software, so that I can control the length of the displays and add music to the presentation. This is a whole new world of photo presentation opportunity and is also being incorporated into our club's calender. We have several members who have shown really superb presentations.

Took a series of a drama group friend losing his beard for charity at a party a few years ago...

Can't say it was something that had any advance thought, since it was pretty much a spur of the moment thing.

Did a few while at college as I was into the work of Duane Micheals at the time - but I guess these were more photo sequences.

You can get PhotoStage from Sourceforge It's a bit rough round the edges but is free to use. I've been using PhotoShow ($30 shareware) which has a better interface from Photodex
