WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL
|
|
This week's poll (slightly late - sorry) is asking 'When will you next upgrade your camera?'. With all this new kit around you might be tempted to head for more resolution, live view or any of the other new features that are coming out. You might, however, be quite happy with what you have got.
Make for the home page to let us know what you think.
Thanks

No Intension? Is this some sort of internal struggle whether to switch to Nikon (you know it makes sense) or stay with your existing vendor?

I've really no idea. When I next see some need to I suppose. Having just gone Leica, that may be some time.

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

Hmmmm. Dunno. I've no current intention of upgrading - nor any need to. That doesn't mean I've no intention of ever upgrading, simply that for now, I can't even envisage the timetable. I upgraded my first DSLR after 3 years, but that was for features I had wanted right from the start. There aren't many things I could imagine upgrading for right now, so it's likely to be when my existing camera has had a lot more hammer than now - more replacement than an upgrade.

I'm not sure either. I have been very tempted by the D300 but I don't have the money and my D200 is a great camera. I'll probably upgrade sometime in the next three years, however.

I'd like to replace my Eos1v to maybe a 1v, or an Eos3, probably sometime in the next few months. I don't intend replacing my digital body any time soon.

I've been thinking about upgrading my ageing Russian Zenit B and the hand held lightmeter for some time now. It's starting to show its age. I've got my eye on a Pentax Spotmatic on E-Bay. that should see me ok for another thirty years or so. I hear there is some new technology called "digital" rearing its head. It'll be a flash in the pan fad if you ask me. Nothing will replace Kodachrome 25 transparency film.

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

If I suddenly found a big gold nugget, I'd follow the advice that's often given here - I'd keep my existing camera (Samsung GX-10 twin lens kit) and spend the money on a wide-angle lens; either the Sigma 10-20mm or the Samsung 12-24mm. I would also love to have a good A3 printer as, currently, I'm limited to A4. So I've said that I've no intention of upgrading my camera.

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

I have recently added to, rather than, perhaps, upgraded. I had no intention of doing this - until the reviews on the D3 came out. The D3 has taken photography to new horizons. Its low light capability is unbelievable. I have taken photographs at ISO 25,600 and they are remarkable. Selling off underused Leica and XPan gear not only funded it and the new 24-70/2.8 but left plenty in reserve.
So,I have added FX to DX, which I still love with the D2X. But more importantly, I have added to my photographic capabilities in a way I had never envisaged. As Bjorn Rorslett has said, we are not talking about 'available light' but 'available darkness'.

|
Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL
|

I voted "won't upgrade" because I don't think I will within 5 years. OTOH if the damn thing breaks I'll replace it, in which case most likely with an "upgraded" model.
Quote:

The only thing that would make me consider upgrading seriously is if a camera came out with hugely better low noise /high ISO performance than my EOS 5D. Nothing wrong with the 5D for normal photography but it's noisy for astrophotography.
I'd like built-in sensor cleaning and autofocus capability out to f/8 but I'm not going to shell out loadsadosh just to get those features.

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL
|

I must admit that for the first time in many a long photographic year, I've never felt less inclined to upgrade such is my contentment with my current and now increasingly "out of date" Canon EOS10D camera. It does exactly what it says on the tin and fulfills most if not all of my photographic needs, so why upgrade? Well the "need" to "upgrade" at all raises certain interesting questions like "what are people's motivations for upgrading"? For me, it would be because a piece of kit has emerged that represents a "significant" moving forward of the capability and standards of picture taking. To this end I see very little of major "significance" emerging since the advent of the digital age and to my mind most of the recent advances have simply been "window dressing" and tweaking of existing standards.
Clive has referred to the new Nikon D3's low light capabilities and he presents a convincing case for it's inclusion in the "significant" new innovations list. It's price however, ensures that it will remain an "exclusive" if "significant" innovation and unless or until it's standards are widely adopted by other camera makers I feel it will remain thus.
So will I "upgrade"? Well I put down "within 3 years" and only because I have faith that the "boffins" are working away even as we speak at something new right now which will mark a "significant" moving forward of picture taking ability. If not, then I guess we're in for another three years of "window dressing".

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

I have just counted the contents of my camera shelf and it contains 6 Canons and one Bronica that I bought over about 35 years, plus one Datematic and a Nikkormat that I inherited. Of course there is also the E510 I actually use (not to mention the 500 I gave away to my daughter) That makes an average of one camera every 4/5 years. There was a brief flurry at the beginning of digital era when I was chasing features but the E510 is so good that I expect it will last the usual 5 years before I move it up to that shelf.

Difficult one to answer.
Not until something with everything that the D3 has to offer, but with the price of the D300 is released.
If Moores law is roughly true for cameras as well as computers that should be in around 4 years.
Fingers crossed.

I ended up plumping for within 5 years as I suspect within that time period there is likely to be some technical advance that's really worth having... or my D30/20D will die.
OTOH if I win the lottery I'm getting a D3...

I went for within 3 years, but like others that really depends upon what products come next. There is currently nothing available that I'd realistically want to swap my 5D for and any eventual replacement will have to be a major step forwards to be worth an upgrade.

I said within 5 years, as I took 'upgrade' in its widest sense. I'll be buying other (almost certainly film) cameras in the much shorter term (for fun) which aren't 'better' as such. In 5 years time I might be tempted to go for a new digibox - none of my non mechanical cameras have lasted much more than that.

Well I've said 'within 1 yr' but really mean that I'll add a DSR to the collection in that time period, hopefully in March. I am not considering an upgrade as such, rather a different tool. Once I've bought, unless I break it, I do not intend to 'upgrade' - rather use it until it falls apart.

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

I will upgrade when I make a foolish impulse buy and the retailer doessn't fail to deliver by my required date. I learnt a long time ago to always make time of delivery an essential condition of orders to supply goods which are in short supply (time of essence). I have found it as useful to cancel foolish impulses as it was to put pressure on deliveries. Thank goodness that my chosen supplier could not supply a D3 within the month from my order in December. My D200 is good; it is better than I need; I do not need a D3 or D300. Now that both cameras are available I must remain disciplined and not upgrade until Nikon produce an equivalent to the Canon EOS 5D at a sensible price and weight. For the time being I am safe because all spare cash accept an emergancy fund is tied up in 3,6, and 12 month investmants, but by March temptation will be rearing its head.

I ticked 1 year as I'm thinking of upgrading my EOS5 to a 3 but I don't think that's go much to do with "more resolution, live view or any of the other new features that are coming out"
I'd just like better AF and considering I'd need to get a 1D (or 5DmkII) to get the same AF with digital a £100 second hand EOS3 seems pretty reasonable

Given the improvements between the OM1/2 and OM3/4, I could be tempted when Olympus release an OM5 or OM6. Otherwise, I might consider a new LF camera if I find I'm contrained by the length of the bellows on my existing camera.
Which means, unless a camera breaks down, I don't envisage getting another.

I'm more or less with you Will.
There's nothing available that significantly adds to what I already have - certainly not enough to cause be to part with lots of money !
OTH if either of the following was to become available I might be tempted.
Either infallibly accurate autofocus that worked at 1:1 magnification without hunting and allowed me to choose precisely (and I mean precisely) the exact part of the photo that I wanted to use as the focus point. It must also work instantaneously.
Or a hinged live view screen that could be split so that it showed the whole picture area and also a very highly magnified section of the image. The magnified section must be a section that I choose and I must have the means of choosing the section from anywhere in the picture area. Again the screen resolution must be such that I can be 100% sure of the accuracy of focus. I'd also like an accurate and easily viewable representation of the true depth of field. I don't mean the dark screen, barely visible, stuff that we get with the traditional DoF Preview - but something really useful (and of course adjustable).
Too much to ask? Maybe but, for me, things that might make me think about a new camera.

I went within three years. Not because I'm unhappy with my 5d but i reckon I will have clocked up 150,000 shutter actions by then and the camera will have reached the end of it's reliable life. There are really no new features available that would make me need or want to upgrade today. All the fuss over the supposed invaluable high iso available on the new Nikon is a great example of this. HOw many published images or for that matter images in your portfolio of work are actually taken at speeds of over a 1000?

Must say I use ISO 1600 and 3200 rather a lot on my 5D - it does indeed open up a new world. Although the quality might not match the 3D, it's still way ahead of anything else and more than usable. I took a sequence of shots at 1600 by mistake a few weeks ago, and then reshot at ISO 100. The 1600 ones are brilliant.

Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! I was quite happy with the fact that the D300 was all the camera I need (I ticked the 6 months option for upgrading) but after reading more and more reviews on the D3 I can't but help lusting after the low light capabilites. I think that I will be upgraind to a D300 and with this I'll look to seriously start to go down the semi-pro route and see if I can generate enough income to swing a D3. For my money, a D300 with the 1.5 x crop and a D3 would be an awsome team.

Upgrade? Hopefully not for at least five years - my just-bought D300 is superb and although in the past I've upgraded every 18 months, the D300 is the first I've bought that is almost top of the range.
So unless Nikon bring out a 21MP FX DSLR in a body the size of the D60 for £9.99 in the next five years, I don't think I'll be upgrading. )

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

Surely there are only three valid reasons for upgrading?
1. "Because I'm worth it".
2. Because I'm pushing at the limit of the image quality my present camera can produce.
3. Because additional facilities will extend my picture-taking opportunities.
The majority of those who have joined in the survey say they expect to upgrade within three years yet, on this thread, few people have said that their current camera doesn't meet their needs. The over-riding reason that people have stated for technology forcing a change is future improvements in sensor noise performance yet I suspect that most of us get perfectly acceptable results with our existing equipment. I also get the feeling that the majority feel that technological advances will accumulate until they feel they *have* to upgrade, without being clear that their photography will, in terms of image quality, justify this. So, if my reasoning isn't flawed, the real reason most people are likely to upgrade is "because they're worth it". This is fair enough but surely it reinforces the idea that extra lenses are the better investment?

Only if the lenses you have are inadequate in some way i.e. you need focal lengths you haven't got at present, or closer focusing ability, or wider aperture, or even just lighter ... or lenses which are better optically than your existing outfit ... though trawling this forum seems to indicate that those who have outfits including a "cheap and nasty" kit lens tend not to think of replacing it.

There's more to the upgrade situation than just image quality - what about ergonomics, versatility and ease of use?
When I upgraded form my D30 to a 20D it was partly about pixel count I admit (8Mp gives more scope for cropping than 3) but also about versatility, battery life and response times. The 20D offered not only more pixels but response times much more akin to my film cameras, faster write/burst speeds and much better battery life. While it is a bit poorer than the D30 in some areas, notably mirror noise and ISO changing, in most ways it is a better camera.
This is not to say the older camera doesn't get used though as some of my recent stuff has been from the D30 but for critical use I'd take the 20D for overall performance...
I'm tempted by the 40D but at the moment I'm budgeting more for glass than bodies.

Like many others, I'm waiting for the 5D replacemant to be announced and launched. Not that I'm intendening to buy one! But, as we keep hearing, many others are; so my hope is that someone will be selling their current 5D.
Then I'll have TWO , and that will be my upgrade

After doing a paid shoot last year and having to shoot at ISO 1600, believe me, I need to upgrade from my D70s if I'm to continue doing this kind of work.

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

I ticked 'No intension (sic) of buying another'.
My reasoning was as follows:
1) I have two E1's (one still in its box), which are tough as old boots, reliable, and more than fulfil my requirements for a digital SLR.
2) I recently bought a Canon G9 compact (having previously used the G5). Its a great little camera, but is noisy and creates huge files. I would only consider 'upgrading' the G9 if its replacement had fewer pixels and was quieter at high ISO speeds.
3) I have a very nice OM4Ti with a good selection of Olympus prime lenses; my favourite being the 35 mm f 2.0. Others may beg to differ, but I firmly believe the OM4T1 was one of the finest manual focus 35 mm SLR's ever made, whilst Olympus prime lenses are about as good as they come.
4) I have a pair of Mamiya 645 Pro TL bodies with Mamiya prime lenses. Loaded with Velvia they are capable of producing some stunning images.
5) I passed my old Pentax MX and ME super outfit on to my son, but still get to use it sometimes.
Please can someone tell me what I would gain by 'upgrading' any of these, or whether they would 'improve' my photography?
About the only upgrade I would consider at present is an LX body for the Pentax lenses, but as SWMBO keeps reminding me, 'how many cameras can you use at one time?

A shiny D300 - I figure that 3 and a half years is an acceptable time. I upgraded my first SLR (Zenit EM) to a Canon AE1 after 3 years, and my first Autofocus SLR after the same length of time Nikon F50 to F80. The D70 isn't dead... it's just semi-retired!
I feel it's time to move on if you feel restricted in your photography by the camera you own, although digital has moved the goalposts a little. I plan for my D300 to be in use for the same length of time, but feel the next jump will be to FF.

I would have been just ahead of you had finances suddenly gone south at this time of year. Home improvements works have come in far more expensively than first thought so I'm going to have to offload kit to be able to afford a D300 and a 70-200 AF-s that I covet so much.
After that, I'll be looking for a FF to compliment rather than upgrade the D300. The 1.5x crop factor is a ket advantage for a lot of my photography, though I'd be very interested to see comparisons between a FF D3 image cropped to match the size of a D300 one.

Don't think so. I have adequate equipment to see me through to my demise. Film cameras are still here and will see out many generation of digital before they are downgraded to doorstops.
My F4's are perhaps 20 years old no and still delivering the goods whilst the D200 only 2 years old is showing its age already.
The benefit of film is every shot you take you use a new 'sensor' that is dust free.

When it comes off the supply reel, yes. By the time it's been through the processing tank, and dried, it ain't necessarily dust free.
I think the dust bugs most like to strike at the drying stage, but bits of grit trapped in the cassette light traps can be awkward b*gg*rs too.
You are of course right in that such problems do tend to be self-limiting, and self-healing, which is not the case with digital sensors!

Re: WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL

I ticked the three years box.
By then I'll be more than comfortable with the camera I've got, might have bought all the lenses I'll need for the 'system' and any teething troubles of currently new technology will have been ironed out.
By that time we might have some spare money, and I might enjoy the challenge of using a camera that offers more features.
If I suddenly had the money now I don't know what I'd do with it, probably spend it on something photography-related but not necessarily a camera.

That was never my experience, dust was just in different places with each image. In my darkroom days I was forever retouching out dust marks. Now since I bought my first E system DSLR two years ago I have not had a single speck of dust.

For a film camera, probably soon. The upgrade will be in the form of another used body, which I'll restore.
For a digital camera, within five years and only once. No more digital SLRs for me. I don't want to buy into another lens system. The only digital camera that would interest me is a full-frame digital Zeiss Ikon.

I have nothing planned, but Elsie and I will get an extra 25p a week on our State Pension this year and that opens up all sorts of possibilities . . . . .

Well, Ive started upgrading and will be doing so for the next few years.
I brought a new mafrotto 190xb to replace my old tripod, and will be investing in a d300 aswell as a 70-200 f2.8, a wide angle some primes, flashes, remote releases etc etc etc.

I just don't have the money to waste on this endless cycle of digital-camera upgrades because the maker made the LCD larger or added some feature that should have been there in the first place.
There are just so many great film cameras that don't require you to charge the batteries and don't require you to press five buttons, flip a switch and do a short version of the Riverdance to take a photo.
While I marvel at the newest digital toys, I don't lust after them.

Northen Nikon - the 70-200 AFS is a thing of beauty - I love it!
Someone was asking about high ISO's - I was at the Babyshambles gig last night, scraping away with 1/60th at f/2.8, ISO 1000 and there is subject movement in most of the shots. At ISO 6400 on a D3 I'd get no more grain than the D2X at ISO 800 and much higher shutter speeds! Can't wait!
