Fair weather photographers - new poll
|
|
Do you take pictures in the rain, or does it need to be a sunny looking day for you to take your camera out? Traditionally a blue sky with fluffy clouds is said to be a great day for making pictures, but aren't rainy days just as good?
Let us know what you think by taking part in this week's poll. Go to the HOME PAGE to vote.
Thanks for taking part

The wording of the question is a bit odd, it reads as if we are being asked if we take out our cameras whenever it rains, which I don't, but yes I often take pictures in the rain.

Yes, I just make sure I use a hood and shelter the camera as much as possible.

I don't mean do you nip out as soon as it starts raining - but, does the rain put you off taking pictures?

No, rain doesn't put me off - it's pouring at the moment and the Ev is about 9 but I've just been out taking some photos

I guess there will be an influx of votes by people who use their cameras in the rain when those on today's London trip return. The next theme in my club's mono competition is 'rain', so I'm sorry I've had to miss the outing.

Does this answer the question?
Taken at a rather damp sprint at North Weald. They don't usually stop racing when its raining so I don't stop taking pics. Sometimes the rooster tails from the tyres can make a much more interesting shot

Hmm. For landscape work I don't really like a "blue sky with fluffy clouds", I do however like the quality of light about 3/4 hour either side of sunrise or sunset. For botanical recording photos a high thin overcast is best. Rain or a very strong wind is a deterrent to me; I'd usually carry a compact in those conditions, and very likely wouldn't use it. I think it's just that I find it hard to see "photos" when I'm uncomfortable!
As for poor light - I had the shutter of my Canon EOS 5D open for about 5 minutes in near pitch darkness last night... sky was clear in between showers (all day) and rain moving in (around midnight).

Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll

Another poll slightly open to interpretation. I rarely take my camera out if I know it's going to be raining all day unless I have a specific shot in mind and I voted no on that basis. However, if I'm out with my camera I don't normally stop shooting just because the weather has turned inclement.
|
|
|
Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll
|

If it's raining I might have a compact but I won't have gone out specifically to take photographs. I can't cope with real rain particularly if using a large format camera. On the other hand I certainly seek out mists and heavy skys for landscapes.
|
|
|
Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll
|

I voted no because I probably wouldn't choose to take my camera out on a rainy day, unless it was an important occasion.
If it starts raining when I'm out then I take care not to let camera and/or lens get too wet and just carry on. Dry it in the airing cupboard afterwards.
I've got some silica gel sachets in camera and lens bags, don't know if they would do much good, but at least it makes me feel as if I'm prepared.

|
Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll
|
|
I voted No because for the last few weeks I haven't had time to take my camera out on any days, rain or shine
Can't really describe it as rain here in Norfolk though, more a monumental deluge of biblical proportions, the river is already over the bank & the horses are up to their armpits in mud... and it's still raining...

|
Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll
|

The poll title is something like "do you take your camera out on a rainy day?" ..... so I do (more on the offchance that it will stop raining, rather than because I hope to take a shot in the rain)

You're dead right there. I'm going to look out for an underwater housing before the next AP trip.

Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll

I've gone for 'yes' because my camera goes everywhere with me rain or shine. Taking pics in the rain is a different matter - I would if a photo oportunity arose whilst I was out but I can't remember thinking "Oooh it's raining, I'll go out and take some pics"

Knowing that my Samsung GX-10 is weatherproof has made me quite blasé about using it the rain, even though I have to keep an eye on the lens, which isn't protected. The lighting is often pretty flat but I'm finding that there are lots of opportunities for taking pictures that reflect the weather.

I voted yes, because while I prefer it dry a spot of rain wouldn't stop me going out. Colours can be more saturated in rain anyway.

I got saturated in Cardiff last Saturday (and Sunday) and saturated in Camberley this Saturday. The forecast for next Saturday isn't looking too wonderful either

I have to say I am a tad hungover this morning but I did take some shots out in the rain. Sadly the weather was so grey and dark that it was rather uninspiring.

Very little photography got done but it was an excellent day.
As for being a "fair weather photographer"... my opinion of them is the same as my opinion of "fair weather cyclists". You've got the gear, go out and use it

Yeah. I think the last pint of Fullers London Porter that I threw down my neck whilst waiting for the train at Paddington did the damage. Apparently I was quite incoherent when Mrs H picked me up and poured me in to the car at Didcot station.

Put it down to stress and relief at having organised an excellent day out, especially good idea to book that cellar room so far in advance

As was today. I had to do some horse portraits this morning and ended up doing most of them in their stables. Fortunately they were all OK with the flashgun!

Rain doesn't actually put me off taking photos, but worry about getting my equipment wet. My favourite wet weather camera is my Olympus XA - small enough to stuff in a dry pocket with a quick to use lens cover, too.

Oo-er missus!
I don't worry too much - but I love bad weather for landscape photography. Today, though, I was taking pics of Sam at his Under 7s rugby in pretty awful weather - got some decent shots with the 30D and Sigma 70-200 EX, keeping it under my coat when not in use. Forgot to close the bag, though, so it's soaking...

Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll

Answered 'yes' to the poll - and as one of yesterday's mob, not every one of my pictures was taken in the pub!
Here's one of them...
To be honest, if I don't have anything already planned 'oh, lets go out in the rain' isn't the first thing that comes to mind ('let's stay warm and dry' is more likely!), but if it's a fixed plan, or a one-time opportunity, I'll try to make the most of it. Here's one from the botanical gardens in Madeira (think the rain adds to this picture)...
Muggins here chose the week to go there for a holiday when it peed down half the time - but I wasn't getting a second chance at that trip, so off I went in the rain to the gardens. It was quite warm rain anyway with places to shelter on the way around, and Ok, I'll admit, just like the London trip, there was a bit of 'let's have a drink or two until the worst of the rain stops'

Thanks Clive. Actually it's the colour that makes it for me, and I processed it with that in mind. But granted it could be interpreted in other ways. You can take a closer look at a big print of it in April and tell me if that alters your opinion at all. :-)

|
Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll

Yes, the colour is gorgeous, Huw. But what I meant was that it might be interesting to try nasty D things with the channel mixer thingy to achieve varying tones with the brollies. But it might not work as well as the colour. But it is one of those 'complete' images where both the hues and tones all work so well. I shall look forward to seeing the print in April!

Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll

I used to consider myself a 'fair weather photographer' but saturday's London meet has changed all of that. I took several photos on the day, some with the dslr when the rain was slight and others wth a Nikon Coolpix 5400, which did get wet, without any sign of a problem.
I know my K10D is weatherproofed, but the lenses I have are not, so I was a bit cautious, perhaps too much so, but a ruined lens is an expensive thing to replace.
I am now much less aprehensive about doing some more wet weather photography.
|

|
Re: Fair weather photographers - new poll

I don't let the rain stop me. I've used most of my cameras in the rain without any problems. They include the lower end (some might say flimsy) SLRs such as the EOS1000 and 400D. I even went on the Maid of the Mist (Niagara) using my EOS1000 with no detrimental effects (I did have it in a plastic bag with lens hole and a skylight filter attached admittedly).
I do dry the cameras off before putting them away in a dry bag with plenty of silica gel.
I will say that I did have some misting up going into the pubs though

Well I am heartened by the results so far - it's good to know that my DVDs are slightly more popular than standing in the rain!
While showing some students how to do panning shots last Thursday on Park Lane it bucketed down. Six teenage boys all wearing hoodies, gathered under and shooting through the glass of a bus shelter attracted no attention whatsoever - I love Londoners!
