Compact Pana vs Canon

Hi I am about to replace my dead IXUS 800IS - suffered from a fatal Lense Error code after 2 years. Prior to this I had an Ixus V3.

I am looking for the best blend of strong optical zoom and high image quality, which I realise is a tall order when looking at a non DSLR.

I have read numerous reviews and I am started to get confused.

I have considered the:
Panasonic TZ5
Panasonic TZ4
Panasonic FX35
Canon 860IS
Canon 960IS
Canon 970IS

Guy in Jessops at the Trafford Centre last night recommended the Sony DSC W300.

I have considered a Canon G9, but think it might just be too bulky for my requirements.

Strong optical zoom suggests the Panasonics to me. You won't get much in the way of manual shooting options but they take a mean picture. They are a little on the heavy side, though

The FX35 is a lovely little camera, if you want manual control the FX500 is also worth looking at, though I don't like the feel of it. Big zoom wise, the TZ range are still lovely.
