Yes but most things are many times more expensive now.
By and large you get what you pay for. More expensive filters tend to have better coating, digital cameras really appreciate these. And some of the bargain basement filters are bottle bottoms. I bought a "cheap" unbranded UV protection filter (around £12 in 72mm size) off an eBay site, mounted it on a 300 mm tele lens and couldn't get a sharp image. With the filter off, the images would cut diamond. May have been cheap but it was very bad value as it was worth nothing.

I buy secondhand filters, usually at a vastly lower price than the apparently high figures asked now. I am careful to inspect for damage and only buy the better quality brands. Many shops remove these items from part exchanged or bought in stock and sell them separately, for obvious reasons. There are also usually plenty to be found at camera fairs, some in fact being unused. I did buy a supply of Marumi filters from the previous importer of these, they were, and indeed still may be, being sold at half retail price.

You need to ask yourself whether it is worth spending money on good glass for lenses and then stick something not so good in front.

I just bought a 52mm circular polarizer from Calumet (own brand) for £15.45. Not used it yet, as it is getting dark too early. I'll try it tomorrow.
