R.I.P Nikon F4

One of my two Nikon F4's has turned its shutter off for good and ....died! It seems that one of the pins on the edge of the curtain has sheared and the curtain leaves are all a tangle!
I enquired how much to have it repaired and after I picked myself up off the floor realised I could buy another complete one, 2nd hand for less.
Instead I am thinking about a F100. Much newer 2nd hand and will do all I wish. Has any one out their any views on the F100. The alternatives, the F5, is too big and heavy and the F6 - too expensive - yet!

I,ve recently bought an F2 and find I take it out about a third of the time now.
Fun with film again. Good luck on you,re hunt, I,m sure the F80 is banded here as a goodun....

F4's are cheap nowadays, less than a couple of hundred - mine cost me about £400 a few years ago for an F4E, since then prices have dropped no doubt due to digi.
Been after a grip to turn it into a standard F4 for a while but they go for silly money don't know why so you could probably flog it and make some money towards another camera (that's if both of your F4's are the same). you can also flog the viewfinder since it comes off and maybe the focussing screen. Dunno if the film door is saleable - could be useful to someone who's dropped theirs maybe?. F100 sounds like a good camera though I'd have an F5.

My views as an outsider: the F100 has vastly superior autofocus to the F4 and is a terrific all-round camera. The handling just seems much more "together" to me, whereas I've personally always thought of the F4 as a camera designed by a number of people who never actually met, if you see what I mean.

A repairer acquaintance considers the F90x to be the best of the non-single figure Nikon autofocus film cameras. Certainly it feels more robust than the F100, good examples can be found for less than £100.

Sorry to hear of your F4s demise certainly a GR8 workhorse.
I traded my F4s in for the F90x when it first came on the market in fact still got it tucked away with rest of my collection.
I later purchased th F100 but only had it for a short while traded up to a pair of F5s.
Partly due to the fact there was a few reliability issues with the early F100s.
And I needed 100% reliability at that time from my gear.
Those issues on the F100 are long gone now as far as I know, and they can certainly be picked up for a bargain price as can F90,F90x and F5s are almost being given away these days.
If you really want something fairly lightweight with Big performance a F80 will not disappoint.
