It's that time of year again (lens questions)
|
|
I'll be into my summer job again soon and I have some ideas of what lens I'm going to pick up for my D40; a 50mm f/1.8 and a 55-200 VR lens. My budget is under $500 CDN. Honestly though, I can probably do without them for the summer, but I just want some new hardware and have some fun looking forward to something in the summer.
Are there any other offerings from Sigma or Tamron that is cheaper than those lens?
Also another question. How often do you guys clean the dust off your sensors?

Don't forget this is mainly a UK site, so any prices we give will be in £ and not $CDN. We do have a couple of Canadians here though so they might be able to help. One of them actually works in a camera shop as well
As for dust... clean whenever necessary

Nikon 50mm f1.8 - get it! No better lens of that type at the money. 55-200VR - get it too! There are cheaper lenses but the are inferior (read some of the magazine group tests) - the only better lens is Nikon's non-VR version, but it's only marginally better and the VR function is very useful. I have the non-VR version myself

Note that the 50mm f1.8 will not autofocus on the d40.

Sweet! I guess my mind's pretty set on those two lenses.
Yeahh, I realized that it was going to be manual, but after messing around with the old minolta with the broken autofocus with a 50mm lens a while back, I think I can manage until next year (D300 maybe?)
Are all 50mm's very similar to each other in terms of manual focusing?

Pretty much I reckon though I'd say the Nikkor has a better feel than, say, the Canon (I've got both). Don't forget that the AF system will still give you focus confirm/assistance. The f1.8 aperture does help the subject 'snap' into focus tolerably well even with the relatively small and dim finders of APS-C cameras though it still takes a bit of practice to focus accurately in manual with any degree of speed...

WHS ^^^^ but to add that all AF 50mm lenses are similar in terms of manual focussing - MF lenses tend to have a greater arc of travel from close to infinity, so are easier to focus accurately than AF ones. Makes aperture control a little awkward on a D40 though!

Ahh, nice. I'd only pick up a MF 50mm if I saw it at a garage sale for cheap. (more of a novalty item rather than anything) Has anyone tried out reverse couplers with it before for Macro shots? I may buy one of the couplers because of my budget.

Purchase one complete!
I picked up the 55-200 vr, and was positvely surprised at how well it worked! If this is just a consumer lens, I seriously wonder how much of an upgrade the 70-200 VR lens is. I also picked up a polerizer filter for fun.
I've been also considering a (sb-400) flash, but i would have to choose it over the 50mm lens. What would you guys choose?
