Beer can + KM/Sony Digital

Hi - I've had a quick scan thru posts, but nothing specific to my query - so dumb-ass question alert

I've got the 70-210AF beer can (+ others) and use it with a 9000 and 700si. If I were to pick up a 7D or simiar, what's going to be the outcome? What basics are/aren't going to work? What does the digital sensor size do to the effective "length" of the lens? (ie will a 70-210 become more a 35-135 or a 80-300?)

Cheers all. M

Re: Beer can + KM/Sony Digital

My 'beercan' works fine on my 7D, OK it doesn't have the ADI capability of modern 'D' lenses but functions perfectly well. As to "effective length of the lens?" it will be the equivalent of a 105 - 315mm taking into account the 1.5 crop factor of the 5D, 7D, Alpha 100 or 700.
As to other lenses in your line-up they should all be fine on the DSLRs, there is something in the recesses of the brain that xi (auto-zoom) lenses may loose some functionality, then again I could be talking rubbish.

My 'beercan' also works fine on the 7D. It's a fine lens and one I use often.

Re: Beer can + KM/Sony Digital

Most lenses for older AF Minoltas will work on 7D, 5D and the Sony Alphas, except some early Sigmas in which the electronics are not compatible, for some of these Sigma would replace the chip, not sure if this service is still available though.
I have used Minolta and Tokina AF lenses from the 1980s on my 5D and some later Sigmas with no problems.

Cheers all - I've got the Minolta 28-85 and a Sigma 400, so I guess that means I'd need to get something at the wide angle end to keep the full coverage - any suggestions?

Depends if you want a fast lens or a cheap one; the kit lens 18-70/3.5-5.6 is cheap, but most people seem to upgrade after a while to something faster, faster options would be Tamron 17-50/2.8, Sigma 17-35/2.8-4, 18-50/2.8 or 17-70/2.8-4.
The Tokina 19-35/3.5-4.5 is a bit slower, and thus cheaper than the above suggestions, but could be an alternative to the kit lens, given you alredy have the 28-85.
If budget is less important then you might like the Sony/Zeiss 16-80/3.5-4.5, the image quality is supposed to be very good, however I don't personally think it is worth £300 more than Tamron or Sigma offerings, and it's slower.

Re: Beer can + KM/Sony Digital

Just to echo - the 70-210 beercan works great. I use it fairly often. Last June I used it to shoot the annual air show sponsored by the Rhode Island Air National Guard at the old Quonset Point Navy base. Worked great - I was really happy with the results. In fact, I prefer the beercan on a Maxxum/Dynax 7D or 7 to my older cameras (600si and such) - there's an AF/M button near your left thumb (the sony A700 has the same)that can be set to toggle between auto and manual focus. If the lens starts to hunt around (one drawback to the 70-210), you can throw it to manual in half a second. The anti-shake lets you get away with a lot as well. I've found that I have to be careful when I shoot film on my 7 - I tend to try to use slower shutter speeds than I should.
