That's it for me
|
|
for a while anyhow, I said somewhere else I often have feelings of jacking it all in and my only everyday lens went clunk at the weekend and is hanging on by a thread. So kit (lmao if that's what you call it) is on ebay. 5p listing day 
I have some mixed feelings and a little sad but I think it's the right choice for me to really get off the treadmill for a while and look through 4 years of photographs and reflect on what I've learnt and still need to.
Funny how you suddenly become attached to a 'thing' when it's going!! That camera has made me some great new friends and a fiance!
Anyhow in the meantime I'll be saving hard to perhaps rebuild once I get the urge again.

Good god Tan....................you can't possibly even think of jacking it in! It's just too horrible a thought to even contemplate! A talent like yours deserves to be nurtured and it would be an absolute tragedy and a great loss to photography if we were to be deprived of one of the most impressive and aspiring photographic talents I have had the pleasure to witness in many's a long year! I'm shocked and dumbfounded to think that you are even considering such a radical decision. No, I won't hear of it! I order you to get some new kit forthwith (even if it is that old Nikon rubbish!  ) and put such foolish "quitting" notions out of your head..........................the Tanya I know and love is no "quitter" just because circumstances temporarily conspire against her! Take a break by all means but don't ever scare the sh1t out of us all (and especially me!) by ever considering such a preposterous notion..............................BigWill has decreed that it be so!

You and I haven't really got down and dirty on here (oo-er missus!) But I've seen some of your photographs and I think you are incredibly, incredibly talented and if I could get half as good as you ... I'd consider that an enormous success.
However, whilst you are very skilled with a camera - I can appreciate your frustrations - I've had them in other areas in my life and sometimes you need to take a step back from things to clear your head and take a breather..
You sure you want to sell stuff on ebay? you could perhaps just pop things in a box and keep them somewhere until you feel less crap about things?
That being said... if you *are* determined - perhaps use the money you make on ebay to stick in savings and buy brand new stuff when you're ready to come back and start taking incredible photographs again.
Hope that didn't sound too weird, coming from someone you haven't really chatted to - I wish you the very best in the forthcoming weeks and months and hope you feel better and less stressed soon

Oh I know it won't be for long...your fingers will start twitching into camera holding position and your thoughts will be inundated with shutter and aperture values as you go on about your life, as you look at your surroundings and talk to people. So I hope you will be back soon with your great shots and remember, photography is a lifelong profession/hobby there will always be something to learn and improve.

If the lens packing up pushed you over the edge, get your own back, try a different way of image making.
My suggestion......You like high quality still life, medium format is so cheep on Ebay, sort yourself out a nice 'Blad or RB kit and learn a whole new set of photographic skills.
We'll be 'aving you in a darkroom in no time!

Dear Tanya,
I am sure you know your own mind best. Your beautiful B&W still life photos still have pride of place on our wall, and always will. You are a very capable and talented photographer, and your work inspired me to take photography up again.
May I suggest, as others have done, that you don't give it up completely? Try a different aspect - I have a feeling you would create excellent work whatever you turn your hand to. Try film, try infra-red, try portraiture...
Whatever you try, I'd be very interested to see the results!
And whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck.

I too have really enjoyed looking at your photos and often wished I'd been able to take anything as good. But if you want a break, I can understand that. I'd find it hard not to have a camera in the house, even if it was just lying idle but, at the end of the day, they're just mass-produced gizmos that can easily be replaced at a later date (and you might then be able to pick up a good used D3 on eBay for a hundred and fifty notes), but what I hope you don't lose is the way that you obviously 'see' things... taking the time to really look, rather than just glance and hurry past. For me, that's the best bit about photography.

it's been a while now that our tanya has been 'restless' and i think an 'evaluation' break may be just the thing she needs.
tanya's photographic experience has been relatively short, but extremely intense. much more intense then most of us and also whilst simultaneously dealing with many other events in her life. tanya needs this 'cooling off' period so as not to overdo it and not 'burn out' as so many very talented people do very early in their careers from too much intensity and pressure.
many here know that probably, besides BigWill, i'm the biggest tanya fan, tanya encourager and tanya butt kicker -when need be- and i too was momentarily shocked and saddened when first hearing tanya say that she was packing it in for an 'evaluation' period. after a few days thought i've come to the conclusion that this is the right thing for her to do.
as far as getting rid of the kit, that's fine too. unfortunately in this digital age equipment is so quickly 'old hat'. not like my nikon ftn that was still running perfectly and still top of the line 25 years after i got it and till it was stolen . so tanya'll get new up-to-date kit when she get's back AND SHE WILL GET BACK!!!!
tanya has too much natural talent that won't allow her to stay away, but more importantly, she's been infected, bitten by the photographic bug and there is no cure for that, as many of us here can confirm.
so i'm not worried.

p.s. who's going to take book on how long it takes for tanya to get her new camera!

The first half was a bit flat, even though run by the glorious Claudia Gonson who if I had to choose someone I would like to be, I would choose. But they'd lost all their instruments via the soddin airline  , and there was also a story running about the airline losing their radar and having zero visibility and waiting around for several hours to take off, so along with the jet lag they did amazingly well for the mood they musta bin in 
Second half livened up a bit and I died on several occasions
I still want to eat all of them, or snuggle them all night
