Hi Folks, I seem to be overly complicating the task of printing from digital files. For example, with a resolution of 300ppi, I assume that an image of dimensions 1800ppi x 1800ppi would give me a 6" x 6" print, however when I check the image size in print preview it suggests I will actually print out something much larger than this. I don`t have a printer so I need to send the files away for printing - I`m also traveling in abroad so I don`t have access to any course material (I left Mod 10 at home as this a rushed unplanned trip) or anything that can clarify what I am doing wrong. Can anyone advise how I set up the file size so that cropped images will print out to the desired size in the hands of a commercial printer?? Thanks, Chris |

Hi Chris, I'm not sure why I'm leaping in here, as I haven't really got a clue and I haven't got time right now to check out my theory on one of my pics. However, I think maybe your edge measurements might be just in pixels not ppi and the 300ppi is 300 pixels per square inch. In which case, your picture is 1800 x 1800 pixels = 3,240,000 pixels; at a print resolution of 300ppi, that gives a print area of 10,800 square inches (eg a print something like 108 x 100 inches). Does that make any sense in what you're getting, or am I talking complete poppycock??! ![]() Carole |

Hi Carole, Hmmm, I`m sure all my settings are at ppi , it is something that I double checked last time I was on my PC at home on Sunday. I am wondering if there are some hidden settings that I should be adjusting in photoshop, I just can`t figure out what I am doing wrong. Still, thanks for the reply, it breaks the boredom of waiting for a delivery in my Hotel room.. Chris |

Quote: 300dpi, 300ppi - all the same. But a picture of 1800x1800 pixels will not give you an image of 108x100 inches! That would be 32400x30000 pixels at 300 dpi! 1800x1800 pixels should give you a 6x6 inch photo. Not quite sure why 'Print Preview' is giving you a bigger picture, unless you've got Scale to fit media selected on the Print Preview screen. That would stretch the photo to fit the page. This is the only thing I think of that would cause this particular problem. |

Thanks Fen, At least my logic appears to be correct. So are we saying that so long as you set up your file so that the image resolution is 300ppi and you specify an 1800x 1800 pixel image, the print will be sized at 6" x 6"? Time to order another coffee.. Chris |

Basically. Unless of course the commercial printer will only print at a different resolution... for example 240dpi then you end up with a 7.5x7.5" picture ![]() Best thing to do is ask the printer what dpi they require and then send them the files as they want them. I tend to send all my images at 300dpi and tell the commercial printer what size to print them. |

Thanks again Fen, So you can specify the print size that you want? Well that makes things easier. I assume you need to use a local specialist printer for this service, It seems a lot of printing services just print to fixed sizes. Chris |

Well, if for example you were getting them printed at... Photobox. You upload your print, select the size and "Bobs your Uncle" so to speak. I use a place called 'Loxely Colour Labs (http://www.loxleycolour.com/) and I set my files to the size I want them printing and send them off. |

Quote: oh well, I did have a very bad blow to the head last night, so I'll blame it on that . At least I gave it a go ![]() I'll have to have a play on photoshop later, to make sure it all makes sense at this end. I have always just done the bit about specifying the print size when ordering the print carole |

Thanks again, I thought I was making a meal out of this. Still no sign of my delivery, so off for some lunch now - at this rate I`ll waste the whole day gazing through the window. Chris |

Quote: thanks, though I think I got my fill of ice last night - I was attempting to learn to ice skate when I hit my head. Or should I say my head broke my fall .... I went straight over backwards, splat, full tweety birds, stars & psychadelic colours trip for a few minutes !!Photography so far has been a bit safer, maybe I'd better stick to that ![]() Carole |

Thanks to everyone who made helpful suggestions. I`m back home now, so I re-visited photoshop last night and everything now makes sense - in fact very easy. Thanks again, Chris |
