Mod 5: white balance setting for energy saving bulbs?
|
|
Did anyone do the artificial light shots for Mod 5 (part A) with energy saving bulbs? I've just done a couple of different subjects, and I thought the closest WB setting would be fluorescent as I thought that was how these bulbs worked. However, the tungston setting seems to have given better results. Just wondered what anyone else had done, or whether anyone knew the correct setting? - or is it a custom WB only jobby?
thanks, Carole

Those bulbs confused me too. They seemed to be somewhere inbetween tungsten and fluorescent so I gave up on them and stuck to 'propper' bulbs.

There isn't a "standard" colour temperature for these bulbs, nor, come to that, for ordinary fluorescent tubes. Those I've measured are between 2700K and 3500K depending on wattage and make (tubes are much higher). I think you'll need to set a custom WB.

thanks a lot, that's helpful. Sounds like I'd better find some old style bulbs for at least part A of mod 5 (as it's about using the white balance presets), but maybe can try out the custom setting with the new bulbs when i get to that bit carole

Hi Carole,
I've got a RHEM strip that I picked up on a course about managing colour. The strip has stripes on and depending on which stripes you can see, you're able to tell approx what colour light your bulbs are emitting.
Holding the RHEM strip under one of my energy saving bulbs produces an effect close to a fluorescent cool white light. But then I've had this bulb for a few years and it's used most nights so it could have changed emmissions over time.
I should just stick to a tungsten bulb for the pre-set WB and perhaps experiment with the energy saving ones in Part B or C.
Lisa.

Good old fashioned bulbs for me on this one.
Time to pull out the energy saving ones and get the old school ones back in!
