Hi everyone, Les has just joined the forum and I was telling him [moaning] that me, Chris and Mark are feeling very lonely as lots of folks seem to have disappeared for the summer!! I know it's the holidays and folks with kids are very busy but it would be really nice to know what you are all up to. So come on.... Michael, matts3, Sheila, Carole, banitsa, Azzi, Fozzy - where are you now and what are you doing?? Lisa.

I am still here and stuck on Module 4. It took so long to get Module 3 marked that I lost the impetus. Head down tonight to do some more. On Saturday my wife and I went to Tate Britain to see 'How We Are: Photographing Britain'. which is a surprisingly large and very fascinating exhibition. It is not only the development of photography but a documentary about Britain and the way of life of mainly ordinary people. It made me think about all the prints and negatives I have stored in the loft over the last 50 years of taking photo's and I wondered if in 50 years time when hard disks have failed and CD's have been lost if the years from 2007 to 2057 could be displayed at a similar exhibition. It would seem to me that hard copies tend to survive, if I had items stored on floppy disk I would have a problem reading them now! I would highly recommend a visit if you can before it closes on the 2nd September. |

I know the feeling Fozzy - I've been stuck on mod 5 for quite a while. I keep thinking I've finished it then something else occurs to me. Mod 4 shouldn't take you too long but mod 5 is a bit of a b... so head down for a burst of activity. The exhibition at the Tate sounds very interesting but I don't think I'll be able to go. Lisa.

Hi Lisa and everyone else, I am still here, still (vaguely) active on the course! I got module 3 finished a while ago, but life just seems to have been so hectic that I haven't got very far with mod 4. I've done the reading and have been playing a little with curves on my own pics, but haven't made a start on the course photos. I'm hoping to find some time this month to get that one finished, as I've been reading al the mod 5 chat with some trepidation (and a feeling of module 2 deja vu!!!) I have been keeping an eye on the chat page, but haven't had much to say, so I'll try and be a bit more vocal over the summer (my summer hol is probably not until october - by which time, summer will hopefully have arrived - so I shall try to do my part to keep the forum active over the quieter months!! )Carole |

Hi Carole, it's really nice to hear from you! Yes there's lots to do at the moment isn't there!? I'm feeling out numbered & in need of some female support on here, and so need you and Sheila to help me gang up on the lads. Where are you going on your hols in Oct? I'm predicting lovely weather in Sept & Oct - mainly because I'm going to Wales at the end of Sept and want it to be nice. ![]() Lisa. |

Quote: ooh, haven't got as far as that yet! I was thinking UK right up until a week ago, when I had just about had enough of the rain and thought maybe we needed to go somewhere a bit hotter! Now we've had some sunshine, I've forgotten about the rain, and am back to thinking UK beach somewhere. Probably won't be wales though, as we went there just after easter (and the weather was so good that 5 days into the holiday, we discovered we had a sea view from our holiday cottage!!! ). But we haven't discussed dates or anything yet, just a vague plan that that would be a good time for us to go away Just hoping the weather might offer a few more photo opps next time!Carole |

Hi guys! I'll have you know, Chris, that despite living in Lancashire, I come from Wales, so that's it now. I'd been wondering what to use for indoor shots til the daffodils come back, so I'm off to get some leeks... ![]() I've hit a great big apathy stage - big changes at work, partner working away quite a bit (so I seem to have been away a fair bit at weekends, which is really my only camera time) and now family illness... I think I did Module 4 along with module 3 in a burst of enthusiasm some months ago, but have cleared my memory stick away in a huge pile of paperwork that I'm making no impression on, so it ain't got sent yet. Module 5 looks very scary, so Im thinking about it in little stages. My life seems to be short of fluorescent lights (not a big problem, normally), so seeing as the fish in the fluo-illuminated fish tank keep moving too much for me to get them sharp (even at ISO 1600, little b*****s), it's going to have to be a still-life of some leeks in the ladies' at the local pub. Sure there's a puerile joke in there somewhere... Still, nailing white balance will be good... Mr Tal will be happy, I keep trying to make him wear grey and sidle into photos. What a patient lad he is... |

Hey Sheila, there you are!!! Your posts are always very humorous, we need more of them! Poor Mr Tal - what having you been doing to him now? no wonder he's working away. Leeks? ladies loos? you'll get banned from the pub! Re the fish - put some brandy in their water, that'll slow 'em up. or superglue them to the side of the tank like I do with the birdies. Really nice to hear from you. Lisa.PS hope your family illness gets better soon. xxx |

I ended up taking the pics at work at 2am. Still... glad to hear your still around and at least thinking of the course.

Hi Lisa Its been ages since I have been on the forum. I'm currently on module 4 but haven't been giving it my full attention to be honest although I'm aware that I need to get my backside into gear and get this done and then start module 5 before the end of September in order to get myself back on track. I'm still taking lots of photos and have just completed a wedding for a friend of mine (they love the photos I took thank god!) and on the back of that I am doing another one in October! So keeping busy but not with my course. How are you keeping and what have you been up to over the summer (if you can call it that!) Matt
Hello Matt, there you are. WHAT!! You're not taking photos for the course! You're doing weddings instead!!! You brave man, think I'll stick with the course photos - weddings would terrify me. For most of the year I've been taking photos for mod 5; it's taken from April till August for me to do it. Though like you I've had lots of other things to do - work, week's togging in Yorkshire Dales, work, a couple of PS courses, more work etc etc. So now I'm on mod 6, and some of the photos I rejected for mod 5 are coming in very handy. I'm off to Wales in a few weeks and despite Chris' predictions of a biblical flood I'm hopeful that it'll be nice. So, you need to get mod 4 finished ASAP so you can start the epic that is mod 5. I'm sure your tutor won't mind getting wedding crowd shots for your submission. Hope you hear from you again soon. Lisa.

Just going away for hopefully a few weeks so will not be around. Camera packed so hoping to get some pictures for mod. one. Also taking laptop so if I get reception I can check on you all to see how your modules are getting on. Now where did I put that grey card.

Hope you have a great time Les and get lots of photos. Lisa.

Thanks Lisa. Well first time I've got a signal on the laptop. The weathers been great and many picture opotunities but haven't taken many, as when I see them I have the tiller in my hand. Tried to get a shot yesterday of a line of narrowboats but just as I went for the camera two very large barges came towards me and as the gap was 10 feet and we needed a total of 14 feet I thought it was prudent of me to stick to steering . Never mind, better luck next time.
Sounds like you're having a good time Les. Can't someone else steer so that you can take some pics? Where did you start from and where are you now? Lisa.
I wish I had but my wife hates steering so she leaves it all to me. Coun't even get her to take the boat into a lock, but that does mean that I can just sit on the back watching her doing all the hard work. We started at Milton Keynes and traveled up the Grand Union Canal, then on to the North Oxford Canal to just above Rugby before turning around. The weather was very good, I even got a slight tan, or is it rust . We still have the rest of this week off so I guess we will take the dog over to the coast and into the Derbyshire Dales for a run. He likes a lot of exercise and its quite cramped on a narrowboat for 11 days. Then back to the course.

Hi Les, yes the weather hasn't been too bad the past week or so! Are you sure it's not rust? Did you see any interesting sights on your trip? Lisa.

Hi Lisa , Chris No we did not see many interesting sites as such, most towpaths look the same, the bridges can be quite nice but just when you think it might make a good picture the nose of a 60 foot boat appears in the bridge hole and you need to make the split second decision to slow down or just jump overboard, that might be where the mud came from, Chris. We did see a large water rat, which the dog chased up the towpath. If he catches it I'll send it to you Lisa to photograph, they say they are harder to keep still than those lovely bird pictures you take. That way it may give me time to catch up on the modules

I'm taking a little break on this one - I submitted module one and was a fair way into module two - but have decided to fill in some of the many blanks in my knowledge so have moved to the foundation course. Hopefully by the time I've finished that I'll have much better skills and a much better camera and can come back and complete this course. |

Sorry to see you go. How will this affect the two year time span for this course? or will you come back and complete it within this time frame. Good luck with the new course, and see you back soon.

Hello everyone, I seem to be taking longer and longer to complete each module - is it just me?? I remember saying that people shouldn`t rush through the modules, however I seem to get increasingly bogged down, often discarding pictures I was originally happy with. I have been close to finishing module 9 on a couple of occassions but on reviewing my images and text decided to discard and start again. At this rate I will use up the full two years allowed for the course - I originally thought I would complete it in 13/ 14 months! I have found it harder to spend time at the PC through the summer(!!??) evenings. Is anyone else experiencing the same?? Chris |

You might be missing out on valuable feedback by trying to send in a perfect module - feedback is in the end much more useful than struggling on your own to get a high mark, Garry |

Yes please do Michael! In fact we could do with some more from Aug; there's only mine in there so far. Lisa.

Hi Chris, yes I agree. I plodded my way through mod 5 and probably took double the sets of photos that I submitted. However, since I took so long and had lots of spare photos some of them have come in useful for mod 6. Lisa.

Hi Garry, You are of course correct, I certainly could could do with your valuable input at the moment! Well I am not planning to work too hard for a while, my son is back at school and it doesn`t look like there will be any surf here in Wales for another week or two (for surfing or photography!), so I think I will assemble what I`ve got and send it to you as soon as I can. Chris |
Hi Lisa, I can`t believe how many posts you`ve made! Well after a horrendous summer of work, I have an easier period ahead - hence me checking the forum. I agree mod 6 required a stack of photo`s but it forced me to open my eyes and look for subjects that I would probably overlook - I guess this is true of most of the modules. I notice you`re having a break in Wales I can certainly recommend the south and west Wales coastline. Chris |

Quote: Just trying to keep the momentum going Chris! ![]() Yes I'm looking forward to my week in Wales. We're staying near Harlech so will probably stay in North Wales as we want to relax and not rush about too much. I'd love to go to South Waless too but having looked at the map it really is quite a way to go. So perhaps another year. Lisa.

Having the impetus to crack on with module 4 on Sunday, I hit a massive stumbling block when using Gimp to adjust the curves...couldn't alter the files sent through !So module4 is on hold for a week or two as I need to order CS3 and get a package that will allow me to progress with the course without any technical set backs! It's got to be better than elements 3.0 and although not upgradeable that doesn't really bother me as I try and keep post production to an absolute minimum as I always aim to get the picture right in camera and then fine tune in photoshop. Soon as I get it I shall move forward very swiftly with module 4 and aim to have this finished and mod 5 started by 2nd week of October! Hope you're having fun and it's always nice to talk to you. Matt

Hi Matt, I queried with Laura when she said CS3 wasn't upgradable as she had previously told me it was! She left me a message after reinvestigating to say that yes it is upgradable!! Just check, but I'm pretty sure it is. Lisa.

Quote: hi matt, are you on track for finishing mod 4?? I had hoped to get it finished last month before going on holiday, but just didn't get the chance. I made a bit of a start on mod 5 while I was away, as I needed to feel I was making some progress. Not sure that many of the photos I took will make it to the final cut, but at least it's a start. I'm slightly terrified by the tales that have been coming back from the faster students about mod 5 ![]() I have been holding out for a chance to get a whole evening to myself to make a start on module 4 (I have little kiddies and bedtime tends to drag on and suck the last drops of energy out of my body so that it is inevitably 9pm by the time we're done, and the last thing I feel like doing is sitting in front of the PC and 'thinking' ).So I was hoping to persuade my partner to put both kids to bed and allow me to get stuck into the module. However, all good plans and all that .... he was working away until a few days before we went away, and we didn't manage to fit it in then, and then while we were away, we found out he'd got a detached retina and we had to come home early for him to have an op. So it's starting to look a bit unlikely that I'll get that evening to myself before 2008 ![]() However, I am feeling very virtuous as I did the first couple of adjustments tonight, so am feeling pleased to be off the starters block. I think I am just going to have to do a little bit each day and hopefully get it done that way. Carole PS if you read my pre-holiday post, you may remember that I was very excited that we had hired a classic VW campervan for our holiday, and I was really looking forward to going in that, and also hoping to get some cool retro photos of the kids ........ well, we found out about the eye op about half an hour before we were going to collect the van! But we've decided that we will go next month instead so hopefully I will still get those cool photos (maybe just in time for the black & white module?)

ah, well I could embellish the sob story further, but it would probably help your cause more if you could use a punchline of '... and she still gets her work in on time!' ... so maybe I'd better just get my head down and get some modules finished!!!

been learning how to take better photos. taking lots of photos. i have found two great web sites that are designed to give constructive feedback to help folk (like us) learn. I have learnt more from these sites - as a result of their (often very direct) critique than i have gained anywhere else. As i may have mentioned before, joining my local camera club helped me in many ways. I found very experienced folk who were interested in landscapes and mono. Some had little or no computer knowledge - so I helped them with that - and they helped me w ith so many tips and advice that I could not help but learn. As a result I have not been here for a while. I have been busy re designing my local camera club web site and also the Northern Ireland Photo Association, web site http://www.bangor-camera-club.co.uk/ http://www.niphoto.co.uk/ But I miss you all, and will try to get back as often as I can. |

well, what do you know ..... this morning I was feeling sorry for myself after cancelling a trip to see my friend (due to us all coming down with the flu) and after a bad night with the kids. And here I am now, feeling totally smug ! Mr Carole (he of the eye op) made the mistake of looking like he was on the mend, so I told him he could look after the kids this afternoon while I did some more of module 4. And, well, blow me down, I've only gone and finished it ! Wow, the joys of getting some solid time to concentrate on it! Mind you, I did pack it up in a great rush with 2 children hanging off me to catch this evening's post, so I've probably left half of it on my computer (please be gentle with me if this is the case, Angela!!).Oh, I am feeling pleased with myself and I do like those there curves ![]() Onward and upwards ...... module five, here I come !Carole PS hello Mark, nice to hear from you again |

I'm still working on mods 1 & 2. I think all of you who are further on than me have used up all the interesting skies that were around This week I went over to the Derbyshire Dales and all I got was grey skies, it was so grey I thought I had got the grey card stuck on the lens. The next day went to Skegness and it was so clear I thought it was the summer, alas no decent pics. So today went to the Peak District and the grey sky turned blue just in time for one photo then it went in again, so could not get the set of three. If I had tried it would have looked as if they were taken on different days. The good thing is the dogs liking all this exercise, and I am not having to get on with all the work at home.
