Contax 137MA query

Recently I bought a Contax 137MA and a 139. Both cameras require the seals replacing throughout as the foam has turned to a sticky goo. I've ordered a light seal foam replacement kit from Interslice to repair them.

On the 139, there is a strip of foam just forward of the ground glass screen that damps the mirror when it flips up out of the way when the shutter is fired. On the 137, there is no foam in this position, it looks like there's a strip of black plastic tape there instead. This doesn't perform any cushioning function, and I'm wondering if this was applies to cover any perished sticky foam residue at some stage in the past.

Does anybody out there have a 137, can they tell me if there is a foam strip on their camera in front of the ground glass screen?

Re: Contax 137MA query

Mine has a strip of (obviously replacement) foam there.

Re: Contax 137MA query

Yes, there should be a strip of foam in front of the glass screen. It acts as a mirror damper.

When i got a 137MA, funnily enough, i had to replace all the light trappings too! Not sure if its just the age or Yashica/Contax used a very poor foam, as most other camera's of comparable age or older ive used, have been a bit better.

Nice, well built camera, but i got rid of mine as i didnt get on with it. Enjoy it.

There should be a foam mirror bumper strip. The black tape you see could be the what was originally attached to the foam. The foam used should be open-cell type. Jon (interslice) will advise if you're not sure but there is some of the correct type included in his kits.

Re: Contax 137MA query

Thanks for the info, chaps.

There's no sign of any residue left on top the tape, I think I'll have to lift it and see what's underneath. I guess the same thickness of foam as that used on the 139 will do.

I've also got a 167 and an ST, I've never checked the seals on them, it'll be interesting to see if they've perished too.
