how to shoot smoke

Hi, i was inspired to try some smoke shots after seeing some great examples on a website. They said they had shot the smoke from a joss stick against a black background. I've tried everything but can't produce the same results.

Any help please!!

Sam

Re: how to shoot smoke

It's all to do with backlight, just like in stage effects. Uplighting or sidelighting from a concealed light, such as a slave/remote flash helps, even a weak one. If not shooting with flash then a torch can work, you just get someone to wave it around vigorously (strobe-like) as you shoot - but it's hit-and-miss.

If you are shooting digital there's unlimited scope to experiment. On film its more tricky and I'd play around with a digicam first to observe the effect, before committing to film.

Also, the more joss sticks you have the more smoke you get (ie cheat!).

Have fun, Alan

I agree, it's all in the lighting.

Re: how to shoot smoke

They sometimes use smoke instead of steam in photos as well as it's easier to capture.

No real help I know - But just a side note

It's a bit late I guess, as this post is several months old, but there is a good article on photocritic on how to shoot smoke.. Have a look on my blog as well for some info & images...

Please keep an eye on your image and file sizes - if you need more help please read the “How to post Images etc” stickies in the AP Magazine section of these boards – thanks. Admin

Maybe a gun camera that takes a picture when you press the trigger?

I took pictures of soap bubbles against a black background and it worked well without backlighting.

Some smoke shots in here that I took.
Same method as mentioned.
black background with a strong light(bowen 500ww monoblock) shing through from the side, but also aiming slightly more towards the camera so i didn't get and spill onto the background.
I also used gel filters as an experiment with the colours.

The smoke was created from incense burners. I think I had 2/3 lit to creae alot of smoke.
Incense sticks are really cheap aswell and create great smoke, I got a pack of 100's from a chinese supermarket for £2. Good luck

Re: how to shoot smoke

i love my nikon d30 and nikon d50 but i found most nikons are rubbish at shooting smoke. The fuji s9600 very cheap camera, is average at shooting smoke but rubbish at everything else
